Burnout is the new Pumpkin Spice. In 2023 A.C (After Covid), a profound shift has taken place in the world of work, and the way people perceive work as a part of their lives. It's not just about punching the clock or meeting quotas anymore. The modern workplace is evolving, and a key factor driving this transformation is the concept of wellbeing. Organizations that recognize the significance of this paradigm shift are positioning themselves for success in the future of work. Here's why I think Inclusive Wellbeing is not just a trend but a fundamental aspect of the future workplace and why we should be talking about it:
1. The Diverse Workforce
The workforce of today is more diverse than ever before, both in terms of demographics and perspectives. More than 8 in 10 Australians have two or more people in their “close circle of friends” who come from national, ethnic, or religious backgrounds different to their own (Scanlon Institute. Mapping Social Cohesion, 2022). Embracing inclusive wellbeing means recognizing and celebrating this diversity. It's about creating an environment where every individual feels valued, heard, and supported, regardless of their background, abilities, or personal preferences.
2. Employee Expectations
Employees are no longer content with just a paycheck. They seek a sense of purpose, belonging, and happiness in their work. Career/professional/occupational wellbeing is seen as one big factor when it comes to a person's overall wellbeing. Employers who are looking to make the biggest difference in wellbeing in the shortest amount of time should focus on teams' wellbeing. Inclusive wellbeing addresses these expectations by fostering an environment that prioritizes the physical, mental, and emotional health of employees. When people feel cared for, they are more likely to be engaged and motivated.
3. Improved Performance
The research is clear: diversity and inclusion is a powerful enabler of performance. Inclusive wellbeing is not just a feel-good initiative; it has a direct impact on performance. Employees who are physically and mentally healthy are more productive. They take fewer sick days, have better focus, and are more innovative. Inclusive workplaces leverage these advantages to drive better business results.
4. Attracting and Retaining Talent
In a competitive job market, attracting and retaining top talent is crucial. Organizations that prioritize inclusive wellbeing have a distinct advantage. Prospective employees are drawn to companies that put their health and happiness at the forefront. Likewise, employees are more likely to stay with an organization that values their wellbeing.
5. Ethical and Legal Obligations
Organizations have ethical and legal obligations to provide a safe and healthy work environment. Inclusive wellbeing measures demonstrate a commitment to meeting these obligations. By proactively addressing issues related to employee health and happiness, organizations can minimize legal risks and promote an ethical corporate culture.

6. Innovation and Adaptation
The future of work is characterized by rapid technological advancements and evolving market dynamics. Inclusive wellbeing encourages innovation by fostering a culture of creativity, collaboration, and adaptability. When employees feel supported and included, they are more likely to contribute their unique perspectives and ideas.
7. Community and Social Responsibility
Businesses are increasingly aware of their broader societal impact. By promoting inclusive wellbeing, organizations contribute to the well-being of the community as a whole. This not only enhances their reputation but also aligns with their social responsibility goals.
8. Mental Health Focus
Mental health has gained prominence as a critical aspect of inclusive wellbeing. The future of work recognizes the importance of addressing mental health challenges, reducing stigma, and providing support for employees. This holistic approach to wellbeing ensures that individuals are not only physically but also mentally healthy.
9. Employee Satisfaction
A workforce that feels supported, heard, and valued is a more satisfied and loyal one. Satisfied employees are more likely to be brand advocates, helping to build trust, credibility, and customer loyalty.
Leading companies with a vision for the future know that investing in your people is the best investment you can make—in the constantly shifting realm of work, profitability alone no longer takes center stage; it's the collective wellbeing of people that shares the limelight. Inclusive wellbeing isn't a passing trend; it's a fundamental shift that organizations must wholeheartedly adopt to thrive in this evolving world of work. Companies committed to wellbeing are not only safeguarding their future but also contributing to a more compassionate, innovative, and sustainable future of work.
