Our nation is facing some of the most disturbing racial injustices in modern times. While we can all rightfully say that these heinous crimes have been happening for many years, the power or connectivity through social media has helped us become more exposed to the cruel realities in this country. That level of engagement has allowed corporations to publicly support causes and speak up about issues that affect our communities more than they ever have.
George Floyd’s tragic murder has sparked major conversations around the globe. Companies that usually would not get involved in anything deemed “too political” have come out with social media statements condemning racism and standing with the Black Lives Matter movement. Some have gone even further and have used their platform to donate money and resources to the cause. While one tweet or one donation won’t necessarily change the world, it does help in the reshaping of our society, and it contributes towards the eradication of discrimination and racial biases.
It is crucial that in times like these, every other major player in America -even smaller companies-, follow suit and openly support the social movements that are working towards the betterment of society. It is NOT enough to stand by the sidelines and get by without getting involved in a conversation that affects all of us regardless of our gender, race or nationality. Companies must reassure their Black employees that they have their backs, that they stand with them and that they will vow to make their work environment a safer one. It is vital that companies publicly encourage a much-needed conversation between the powers that be regarding the racial injustices in America, as they have the platform and the power to be heard in the political and social arena. It boils down to these corporations, fearlessly, coming out and take a strong stance against racism and say NO MORE.
It’s no longer enough to rely on internal anti-discriminatory policies that do not necessary protect employees against microaggressions and racial biases. As a minority working in corporate, it is essential for me to know that my company will comfortably speak up against racism and that they will make the time to ensure there are real consequences for those that engage in racist behavior in the workplace. I want to be assured that it is safe for me to address these situations when they happen without any retaliation, and that they will be fully heard. I want to feel appreciated by my contributions and not defined by my accent, nationality or sexual orientation. I want my company to actively participate in the conversation to take down the oppressive system that has enabled racial biases to ruin and take thousands of lives for centuries.
It's time to speak UP.
