The rise of Donald Trump to hold the US President’s office has become the reason for much speculation. For those concerned with Immigration, they are analyzing the possible consequences that can be expected of his new role and the Republican Party’s command over both the Senate as well as the House.

During his election campaign, Trump had made promises to amend the immigration laws including the deportation of 11 million unlawful immigrants, constructing a wall on the Mexican border at the expense of the Mexicans, and preventing the entry of Muslims belonging to terrorist-linked areas into the US.

The immigration executives are guessing that the new immigration policy will lead to an increase in the number of raids of the refugees leading to more detentions. However, it is important to note that the implementation of the policy will take years due to the need for additional resources and workforce.

The early days of Trump’s tenure, it is likely that the Syrian-based expatriates will be blocked from entering the US because of Syria’s long-drawn terrorist wars with the US.

The erection of the wall at the Southern border could result in employing a higher number of custom and immigration representatives for securing the border, clamping down on employers recruiting foreign staff, and cancellation of birth-right residency. International students applying for courses at the US universities may also have to contend with annulled subsidies and higher tuition fees.

President Trump is also expected to revoke the DAPA and DACA plans engineered by the Obama administration which offered a reprieve to illegal immigrants from banishment and granted them work permits.

Furthermore, there is also fear of the NAFTA treaty not being honored which can affect the US-working professionals hailing from Mexico and Canada. Likewise, the US-based citizens settled in Mexico, and Canada will be uncertain about their future work visas.

It is also unsure whether the EB5 program, which has resulted in a huge influx of foreign investment amounting to several billions of dollars, will be renewed by the Republican government.

The appointment of Donald Trump as the US President also sparks the likelihood of European-based political class to impose further restrictions on people’s movement from one country to another. The Brexit program serves as an example of the ambiguity concerning immigration-based laws.

There has been a surge in the number of applicants for migrating to Canada by those factions of people who do not subscribe to Trump’s policies. It may be advisable for the immigrants to exercise this option.

The future remains uncertain, but the election has raised awareness about the times that we are living in and the approach of the leaders. We can only hope for the best and be prepared for the worst.
