Why I'm tired of hearing about brain-based and heart-based leadership

I'm tired of hearing about brain-based and heart-based leadership.

Don't get me wrong. I do believe in incorporating our brains and hearts into how we lead.?

And it's exasperating to me that when people talk about only those two parts of our human organism.?

To be our most powerful in a rapidly changing world, we need to be operating with our whole self -- from head to toe.?

Your brain and your heart are just two parts of your genius.?

How you use elements of your human organism -- such as your breath, your eye gaze, and your posture -- all these and so much more matters to how you're able to become pressure-proof.

So I've got three quick ways you can move beyond the brain and the heart, and access your whole-bodied genius, especially when you're under pressure at work:

  • Breath:?Next time you feel angry, hurt, surprised -- like when someone interrupts you in a meeting?-- use your breath to unwind from tough emotions so your logical mind can start working effectively again. To calm your nervous system, intentionally make your exhales longer than your inhales for 1 to 3 minutes. Try this. I trust you'll notice a positive shift.?

  • Eye Gaze:?When you're distracted or interrupted, shift your eye gaze to return to greater mental balance. First, look down, both with your eyes and by lowering your head. Next, close your eyes. Then, slowly raise your head, and open your eyes, keeping your gaze soft, as though you could touch the edges of the room with your vision, allowing it to be big and wide. Practice this regularly to literally gain a new perspective. So helpful when things are changing rapidly in your world.?

  • Posture: Your mother's wisdom stands -- sitting or standing up straight can lift your mood. The next time you're feeling down and want to boost your mood, hang your head and slump, on purpose. Then, gradually come to standing, one vertebra at a time. Experiment with what posture feels the most uplifting, inspiring, powerful. Your body knows now to convey power that you can use when you're need it.?

Being powerful under pressure at work is an inside job, where you access your physiology to be flexible and adaptable in the moment. It's also about having great strategies for adapting to change, and the right psychology to weather the twists in the road.?
