Why I’m Taking a Break: The Power of Disconnecting on Vacation

I’m excited to share that next week, I’m heading off on a holiday to explore new and exciting places. The image gives you an idea of my destinations. This isn’t just another trip; it’s a conscious choice to unplug, reset, and reconnect with the things that matter most. Here’s what I’m planning for my time away:

  • Totally disconnecting from devices: No phone, no emails, no LinkedIn—just a complete break from the digital world.
  • Focusing on new places: I want to fully immerse myself in the destinations I’ll be visiting, soaking in every moment without distractions.
  • Connecting with people: Whether it’s engaging with locals or spending quality time with my travel companions, I plan to give everyone my full, undivided attention.
  • Spending time with my husband: This holiday is about reconnecting and enjoying shared experiences together.
  • Exploring and being curious: From exploring cities to hiking trails, I’m looking forward to discovering new sights, sounds, and tastes, and of course do some shopping.
  • Reading a little and simply enjoying myself: A good book, a cozy corner, and the freedom to unwind are all on my agenda.
  • Resting my mind: Above all, this is a time to clear my thoughts, relax, and recharge.

The Benefits of Taking a Holiday: Backed by Science

In our always-on, fast-paced world, taking a break can sometimes feel like a luxury. However, research consistently shows that stepping away from work and everyday responsibilities is essential for our well-being. Here’s why:

  1. Reduces Stress: A study published in The Journal of Travel Research found that vacations significantly lower stress levels by removing people from their usual routines and environments associated with anxiety. Even a short getaway can have a lasting impact on stress reduction.
  2. Improves Mental Health: Disconnecting from work helps restore our mental health. Research from the American Psychological Association indicates that vacations can improve mood, increase energy levels, and decrease stress. The act of stepping away allows our minds to reset, leading to greater clarity and focus.
  3. Enhances Productivity: It might seem counter-intuitive, but taking time off can actually boost productivity. According to a report by The Harvard Business Review, employees who take regular vacations are more engaged, creative, and productive. Stepping away from daily tasks helps to recharge our mental batteries, leading to improved performance when we return.
  4. Boosts Creativity: Experiencing new environments stimulates our minds and encourages fresh thinking. Research published in The Academy of Management Journal found that individuals who frequently travel tend to be more creative problem-solvers. Exposure to new cultures, ideas, and landscapes can spark inspiration and innovation.
  5. Strengthens Relationships: Spending uninterrupted time with loved ones strengthens bonds and creates lasting memories. The Family Holiday Association notes that vacations can help families reconnect and build stronger, more meaningful relationships. For me, this trip is an opportunity to reconnect with my husband and enjoy quality time together, away from the usual distractions.

My Goal for This Holiday

This vacation is about practicing what I believe in: balance, self-care, and the art of being present. By disconnecting from my devices, I aim to be fully engaged with the world around me, whether that’s exploring a new city, meeting new people, or simply watching the sunset.

When I return, I hope to bring back a sense of calm, clarity, and new perspectives. After all, the best ideas often come when we’re not actively searching for them, but when we’ve allowed ourselves the freedom to breathe.

What About You?

When was the last time you took a real break and disconnected? I encourage you to carve out time for yourself, even if it’s just a short weekend trip, to unwind and recharge. Remember, taking care of yourself isn’t an indulgence; it’s a necessity.

Here’s to moments of peace, exploration, and rest—whether you’re at home or on your next adventure.

Great news Paola! I took 6-months off last year for some time with family and travel! It was one of the best things I’ve done in life so far and so glad we prioritised it as a family.

A wonderful reminder! I was fortunte recently to be able to take a long break where I truly disconnected from work. This was made possible thanks to the support and encouragement from my company, managers and team. Have a great time Paola!
