Why I’m Participating in a Coronavirus Vaccine Trial

On January 20, 2020, while the whole world was watching the inauguration of U.S. President Joseph R. Biden, I was on my way to Grady Hospital in Atlanta to begin my own transition as a participant in a 2 year, 2 month coronavirus vaccine trial.
Why would someone who has dedicated her life’s work to natural healing participate in a COVID vaccine trial?
I want to share with you why I feel so passionately committed to doing what I can – however small a step that may be – to stamping out what the head of the World Health Organization called “an enemy against humanity.”
First, I will start with where we are now in the course of this pandemic.
According to The Washington Post, there are now three variants of COVID-19 that may be up to 70 percent more contagious.
That would mean that for every one person who contracts the virus, up to 600 people could become infected, leading to exponential increases in worldwide suffering and death.
Considering that there have already been 100,990,354 cases of COVID-19 worldwide and 2,177,611 deaths, I shudder to think what an exponential increase could mean for the human race.
Yes, I understand that it can take 10 to 15 years to develop safe and effective vaccines given medical history.
Given the ease with which coronavirus is spreading, I don’t believe we have the grace of 10 to 15 years.
I believe what Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told journalists in a virtual news conference.
And that means those of us in natural healing joining with and supporting the scientific medical community to do everything we can do to eradicate this global threat.
I have read with great dismay articles by so-called experts in natural healing who say that masks don’t work and that social distancing doesn’t make any difference.
I feel angry when I read such stupidity and feel these so-called experts are only contributing to the spread of suffering and death.
Professionally I do not want to be associated with such idiocy.
In 2019, I published two books.
In 2020, I spent the entire year writing articles to help people cope with the devastating physical, emotional, spiritual, social and economic effects of coronavirus.
By now I have also worked with countless clients who have contracted the virus and believe me you want to do whatever it takes to avoid getting this virus.
Second, I will share a little about my personal health and what a big step it is for me to participate in a vaccine trial.
I’m 61 years old – two months shy of my 62nd birthday to be precise.
I don’t take drugs.
I’m healthier than I was 30 years ago.
I teach yoga six times a week, I instruct one qi gong class every week, I walk my dog and I lift weights probably two or three times a week.
I tend to avoid doctors but take a wide range of natural healing remedies to support my general health.
I am not anti-doctor. I respect the medical community.
My brother, father, grandfather, great grandfather and uncle were or are medical doctors.
In my work as a medical intuitive healer I teach people how to heal themselves naturally but I recommend they visit their doctors and believe that we in the natural healing community can work in harmony with medical professionals for the highest good of our clients.

Now that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines have been approved, scientists are having a hard time getting people to participate in other vaccine trials. People who had enrolled in the trial earlier had begun to drop out as other vaccines got approved.
When I heard about the Novavax vaccine trial at Emory University, I reached out to volunteer in December 2020 but was told I wasn’t old enough and that the researchers were looking for more minority participants.
I was happy when the researchers called me back earlier this month.
I feel if healthy people like me don’t volunteer to help scientists figure out how to eradicate this deadly virus, who will or who should?
So far I have been impressed with the carefulness of the researchers.
I have to fill out an app every day listing my symptoms.
The study will last for 2 years, 2 months.
I had a 66 percent chance of getting the real vaccine.
Even though my friends who are over 65 are eligible to receive the COVID vaccine, many have had a hard time getting appointments and it is anybody’s guess how long it will be before the vaccine is readily available for the general population.
Meanwhile, I am obsessed – I admit – with thinking about people in the developing world.
They don’t have access to world class medical care.
They may not have the luxury of working from home like I do, have access to natural healing remedies like I do and are quite likely to suffer from hunger as the economic devastation of the coronavirus pandemic deepens.
If I can help someone in Sri Lanka, Gabon or any part of the world by supporting scientists here in Atlanta, I’m all for it.
As we have come to recognize throughout the past year, my health, your health, is very much dependent on the choices that I make, the decisions of people in my community and the well-being of people in far-flung countries like China where the virus is believed to have originated.
I feel incredibly privileged to participate in the Novavax vaccine trial.
If I go for two days with any symptoms of coronavirus, I can send in a nasal swab and have the Emory researchers tell me whether or not I have contracted the disease.
Many who get sick are not even able to get properly tested.

The researchers especially need minority participants and people over the age of 65.
Even though two vaccines are currently available, scientists are still working to develop other vaccines that can be safely and easily delivered to your fellow human beings all over the world.
In my 61 years of privileged existence I have discovered that one of the shortest routes to happiness is to engage in what I call ALL thinking.
I can think about myself. Me. My health, my money, my well-being.
I can think about my tribe. My family. My friends. My community.
Or I could think about the highest good of all. The brotherhood and sisterhood of man.
When I think about how I can contribute – in whatever tiny ways that I can – to make a difference in improving the betterment of everybody, I feel my life has meaning and purpose.
And that makes me happy.
Any my happiness serves me, my tribe and everybody around me.
What is healing? Healing happens when we make choices for the highest good of all.
