Why I Write Children's Picture Books: A Journey of Heart, Nostalgia, and Inspiration

Why I Write Children's Picture Books

There’s something truly magical about picture books. They have the power to shape childhoods, spark imaginations, and create warm memories shared between parents and children. Growing up, I was captivated by the enchanting worlds of Dr. Seuss, the tender storytelling of Margaret Wise Brown, the heartfelt lessons from Eve Bunting, the wild imagination of Maurice Sendak, and the timeless charm of Ludwig Bemelmans. These books weren’t just stories to me; they were windows into worlds where anything was possible, where emotions were explored with care, and where art and words worked together to create something unforgettable.

As a writer, I aspire to craft picture books that evoke the same warmth, joy, and wonder that filled my childhood. I want my stories to put a smile on children’s faces and touch the hearts of parents, creating moments they’ll cherish forever. Whether it’s tackling emotions, celebrating friendships, or bringing history to life, my books are written with the hope of making a lasting impact.

My Books: Stories That Speak to the Heart

So far, I’ve been fortunate to publish books that celebrate the beauty of childhood experiences and emotions:

  • Big Girl, Big Feelings – A heartfelt story about the ups and downs of big emotions, teaching kids that their feelings are valid and important.
  • Max & Bear – A touching tale of friendship and comfort, showing the unbreakable bond between a child and their favorite stuffed friend.
  • A Day with Gram – A nostalgic and heartwarming story about the special connection between grandchildren and their grandparents, celebrating love across generations.

Each of these books was inspired by my own experiences, the emotions of childhood, and the need for stories that comfort, inspire, and bring joy to young readers.

My Current Work: Blending Nostalgia with Adventure

Right now, I’m working on Timmy Parker and the Magic Toy Chest, a picture book that connects the present with the past through heartwarming and nostalgic illustrations. I love the idea of using storytelling as a bridge between generations, and this book allows children to experience the wonder of different eras while following Timmy on a magical adventure through time.

As a former fourth-grade teacher specializing in Readers and Writers Workshop, I’ve always sought out books that would inspire my students. Now, I plan to write the books I needed when I was in the classroom—books that not only entertain but also educate and engage young minds.

Looking to the Future: Science Meets Storytelling

Beyond picture books, I’m excited to be working on The DNA Chronicles, a chapter book series for readers aged 11-17. This series blends fiction with real science, inspiring young minds to fall in love with biology and the mysteries of life. My passion for both storytelling and science drives me to create books that bridge imagination with knowledge, making learning an adventure.

Why I Write

At the heart of everything I do is the desire to tell stories that matter—stories that make children feel seen, understood, and inspired. Whether through picture books that warm the heart or chapter books that ignite a passion for science, my goal is always the same: to create books that bring joy, spark curiosity, and stay with readers long after they’ve turned the final page.

Thank you for joining me on this journey. I can’t wait to share more stories with you all!
