Why I Won’t Use Deepseek

Deepseek, a Chinese-developed AI model, raises serious concerns regarding data privacy, security, and potential surveillance risks—especially when installed on devices in the U.S. Given the Chinese government’s history of leveraging technology for data collection and its strict cybersecurity laws, any software developed by a Chinese company poses a potential national security threat.

Why Deepseek Poses a Risk:

Chinese Data Laws & Government Access – Under China’s National Intelligence Law, companies must provide data access to the Chinese government upon request. This means that any data processed by Deepseek—whether on a personal device or a corporate network—could be at risk of exposure.

Potential for Surveillance – Chinese-developed apps and AI models have previously been scrutinized for embedding tracking mechanisms, backdoors, or covert data collection tools. The possibility that Deepseek could be used for monitoring user activity or siphoning data is a valid concern.

Unclear Data Storage Practices – Where does Deepseek store user interactions? If it operates on remote servers within China, any collected data could fall under Beijing’s jurisdiction, further escalating privacy risks for U.S. users.

Geopolitical Risks & National Security – The U.S. government has banned or heavily restricted certain Chinese tech companies (e.g., Huawei, TikTok, DJI) due to national security concerns. Deepseek, if widely adopted, could face similar scrutiny for potentially compromising user privacy.

Why I Won’t Use Deepseek

I value data privacy and refuse to take unnecessary risks when using AI tools. Given Deepseek’s ties to China, I cannot trust it to safeguard sensitive information. Whether it’s personal data, business-related searches, or confidential communication, I won’t knowingly expose myself to potential surveillance or data harvesting.

Until there is full transparency on Deepseek’s data practices, security audits, and guarantees against foreign government interference, I’ll stick with AI tools developed in countries with stronger data privacy protections.
