Why I Thought I Was Blonde?

When I was a young girl, I wanted to be famous. I dreamed that one day I would be on stage as a dancer and a performer.
I wanted to be like the female performers I saw on television. However, what I saw was that all these women had blonde hair, and I did not.
Because of this, I believed I could only ever be famous and on stage if my hair was blonde. At that moment I created the opinion that Latinas could not make it in the entertainment industry.
I’ve recorded a VIDEO for you and you can click here to listen or watch.
You all know that I freaking LOVE Jennifer Lopez! And I’ve been a Shakira fan since her first album in 1997! I was so excited that they were performing during the halftime show and I was counting down the days for 3 months.
And then. . . the day came! Ahhhh!!!!!
I was cleaning out a closet and found a painting that I made when I was four or five years old. It was a self-portrait, and in it, I drew myself with yellow hair. I truly believed as a child that if I wanted to be on stage, I had to look like that. That I had to be blonde.
I so wanted to blonde when I was a little girl! And I believed that I was ;)
When I heard who was going to be performing at the Super Bowl Halftime Show, I was so excited for all the young girls and young Latina women across the world. I couldn’t wait for them to be able to watch the show and see all the possibilities we as women have. Now, it is not just women with blonde hair who can be famous and adored on stage; this possibility is open to all of us. I feel so empowered knowing this, and I hope you feel that way too.
It is 2020, and we women have more possibilities than ever. I want to give a shout out to the people who inspire and encourage the young girls of today to aim high.
For those women who are paving the way for our future girls. For the men who support strong women, and for the mothers and fathers who help nurture this pathway for their daughters.
The future looks bright, and I am so excited to see how we as women continue to shine.
