Why I think you should try Coaching.

I’m going to be honest. I too was reluctant at first. Go find someone to help me and actually admit I couldn’t do something myself? The outrage!

We, as humans, find it difficult to admit our shortcomings. We like to think we have it all figured out. And worst of all, we don’t like admitting not knowing something, like it was some kind of weakness. Very often we forget that there is so much to know and learn that it is impossible to know everything. Maybe that is why I have always questioned the term “Expert”, because knowledge is so vast, no matter the subject, that I find it very unlikely that one person could know “everything there is to know”. On the other hand, I am always in favor of taking another perspective, which is that of “keep learning”, even when one reaches high competency in a given subject.

But I’m getting a little bit of track here. Since we don’t like to admit we need help, many people are reluctant to seek it. Specially here in Latin America, where there is no culture for the mental healthcare professions, where we keep thinking that only “the crazy ones” need to go to therapy. It is not that common to seek for a Coaching Professional. (And I’m using the term widely here). First of all, because most people have no idea what Coaching is, secondly, since Coaching is not a regulated industry, almost anyone could call themselves a “Coach”, thus degrading the reputation of the profession and, thirdly, most people don’t think they need any professional to help them achieve a higher self. Mainly because that would imply that they are some sort of “lower” version of themselves.

And that brings me back to my starting point, as to why I think you should try out getting some Coaching. First of all, because now, more than ever, people are being dissatisfied with their lives, many people are sucked into social media, mindlessly scrolling for hours, comparing their lives to the amazing life everyone else is having. (Of course, everyone but themselves) And not realizing that they could be better than that. That life is, in fact, better than that.

It is difficult to see our shortcomings, yet, we are experts in making quick “observations” (for lack of a better word) about other people and their lives. So, how could we see where we can improve? And if we did, how are we going to do something to “fix” it? That is where a Coach can help.

Imagine having someone that can take your hand (metaphorically speaking of course) and guide you to the other side, letting you in advance where the pitfalls may be. Guiding you develop a better side of yourself, maybe even designing the life you have always dreamed of, but that you gave up on such a long time ago. I know, it sounds almost too good to be true. But I truly believe that powerful is the power of a good Coach. Maybe you think that it’s not for you, but I really think that one never really discovers one’s true potential until things start to get rolling. It’s as they say, the hardest step, is the first one.

Maybe it is time to take back control of your life, once and for all. Coaching can help you achieve it. But as everything in life, it’s not until you experience it for yourself, that you can’t actually interiorize it and truly make it yours. Until then, keep learning and marveling at those who dared.
