Why I think “equal” equals better networking!
Business networking is a lot like Christmas… there many expectations and myths, but making it a success comes down to your own efforts! That’s why I was particularly perplexed by this recent article on the Guardian website about female-only networking. In my view, its message ultimately lets gender get in the way of networking. It’s nearly 2016, not 1816, so why allow the basic differences between us stop us finding what we have in common? Let’s focus on keeping things equal! I love the fact that the split of businesses in the Catena Network is pretty much half and half male-female and I’m not the only one. It has been frequently commented on by Catena members and guests in a positive light! This healthy ratio means that we’re all concentrating on the businesses we’re talking to - whilst looking to establish relationships with the people who represent them.
As I said earlier, networking is what you make of it. It’s all about social interaction. While it’s definitely helpful to have something in common with the people you’re mixing with, there are much more interesting shared aspects that create a rapport, like interests, personality, business goals etc. I don't think that gender should be the defining factor in business networking. It’s certainly not been issue at Catena where we see so many great connections as a result of our events and business matchmaking. With a great year nearly behind us, we’re really looking forward to building on those associations in the future. As business-owners, we're best when we are as we are - individuals with different traits. So as we look ahead to a new year in business, let’s embrace the differences and collaborate to the best possible effect!
Here’s wishing all Catena members and friends a very happy and restful Christmas!

9 年Hiya Claire Bicknell I totally agree. I ran the It's Women's Business Networking Group for many years then took a step back and thought actually we don't need to network separate. I never feel unequal in a business man's company and I really don't think there are inequality issues whether you wear a suit or skirt or hey these days jeans as we hit a more relaxed approach. I do think within our Women's group there was a great opportunity to share the issues we face as Mothers, carers, jugglers? etc but I think that eventually became more of a friendship/social side of the networking. I think it actually goes against women to have all these 'best women's awards as we never see 'best mens'. Just stick to the best business person and make it simple. I believe we are just equal but different and enjoy what that uniqueness offers. Di Marathon Media and Marketing Ltd
