Why I Teach
Rodolfo Romarate II, EnP, MSc
Managing Partner @ EnviSynergy | Environmental Consultant & Researcher | PhD Environmental Science Candidate
I grew up in a family of teachers, and I believe it has been engrained in our DNA that we are destined to teach. From an early age, I witnessed the transformative power of education through the work of my family members, and it left an indelible mark on me. Over the years, I have embraced this legacy by teaching environmental-related courses at institutions such as Xavier University- Ateneo de Cagayan , Enderun Colleges , Ateneo de Manila University and Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology .
Teaching has allowed me to blend my passion for environmental science with a purpose-driven career, creating a meaningful space where I can contribute to shaping future leaders. Each institution and every group of students has brought unique perspectives, enriching my teaching journey and deepening my appreciation for the critical role educators play in society.
A Refreshing Break From Corporate Life
The corporate world can be relentless, often focused on deadlines and outputs. Teaching provides a much-needed change of pace—a chance to reflect and engage with something that feels truly impactful. It offers fulfillment in a way that corporate work cannot, as I share knowledge and ideas that inspire students to care about the environment and sustainability. The classroom becomes a place where I find balance, grounding, and purpose.
Sharing More Than Just Knowledge
Teaching isn’t just about covering topics in textbooks. It’s about sharing real-world experiences that bring lessons to life. My background in managing sustainability projects and addressing environmental challenges allows me to connect theory to practice. In today’s world, I believe teaching should go beyond being bookish—it should be experiential and practical, rooted in real-world applications. Whether through case studies, fieldwork, or hands-on projects, I aim to show students how these concepts play out in real life, empowering them to address challenges effectively and think critically about solutions.

Continuous Growth
Teaching these subjects pushes me to stay updated with the latest trends and research. It encourages me to dig deeper into issues and develop new ways of thinking about sustainability and environmental challenges. This process of learning and reflection doesn’t just enhance my teaching—it helps me grow as an individual, keeping my mind sharp and my perspectives fresh.
Connecting With Students
Engaging with students keeps me inspired and energized. Their passion for the environment is palpable, and their enthusiasm often reignites my own. They bring fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and a sense of urgency to the discussions, reminding me of the critical importance of our work. Seeing the environment through their eyes—their hope, creativity, and determination—encourages me to stay connected to emerging viewpoints and adapt my approach to better resonate with their generation. These interactions make teaching a truly dynamic and meaningful experience, bridging generational gaps and fostering mutual learning.
Influencing the Future
One of the greatest rewards of teaching is the opportunity to shape the future. Environmental science, management, and sustainability are critical fields that influence how we address the challenges facing our planet. By guiding students to think critically and act responsibly, I hope to inspire them to become advocates and leaders for a sustainable future. Knowing that my work might play a role in creating positive change fills me with hope and purpose.
