Why I stopped being a marketer

Don't worry, this is not a normal article where I will write lots of terms in order to engage you and make you read a long thing. Here's your answer. I stopped being a marketer or "a marketing guy" just because everybody is doing it! Suddenly everybody seems to want be called "marketer" and everybody becomes "a marketing specialist" when they usually just come up with some smart ideas about branding your product or producing some conversion pages that will give you leads or even, my favourite "do your SEO or take care of your social media.…" I know, I've been there, done that!

You can stop to read here. I am just gonna write some thoughts about why I think marketing became redundant and became an economist instead. Why I stopped believing in everybody who spams my mailbox here on Linkedin and other reasons that points marketplace problems that I feel people should talk about. And no, I am not trying to sell anything to you. I stopped selling and still my company (now a finance company) is still growing and getting income. Care to know how?

Why making it easier is wrong!

To the ones who like to "simplify"

Let's face it, Apple changed the game. And not the game of Marketing as Seth Godin defends, but the game of life. The idea of simplifying everything made the world start simplifying the human process of thinking. It is funny how I meet so many marketers nowadays and they all say the same thing. Wait wasn't it supposed for the marketing guys being different and creative? The guys who actually think outside the box? Cmon people what happen???

My theory is that since life is now easier, mental process seems to be easier and everybody decides to do an easy job… And we are nowadays labeled "old styled marketers" when we ask for the company principles and what to they want really to communicate with their customers and audience! How do you expect to generate "leads" or improve your sales funnel, when in fact you are not saying anything worthy to the people who come across your product or company? Is it really implying your marketing ideology and process that takes your market further?

I stopped believing in it

To be honest, I still love marketing. The process of understanding the consumer and understanding what they need to listen and how they interact with others is some of the type of psychology and psychoanalysis that I like to read. However I also understood one thing. People are lazy and they love to copy. They copied sales models, they copied ideologies, articles, methods, ideas and nowadays, even texts and content are copied without repercussion…"In my old days" that was not allowed! I don't know but why did people stopped caring with intellectual property? And I am not only worried about infringing it, but what about owning it???

My path into finance and economy

Do you know what I realised? Most of people who own a business and took the decision of making it their lives, don't really know how to manage it. Some years ago, I learned that a business needs clients, and as a marketing agency you are expected to help your clients increase their sales and get new clients. Okay, in the old sense of business I guess this is true. However let's make the soup more complex. If two guys have the same methods, same "marketing school", same technology, similar results and different prices, obviously that the business owner will choose the "cheaper one". It is called free market apparently!

Some time ago I started believing something different. As a marketer you are expected to create an audience and brand for your clients that will help their sales funnel and positioning in the market why establishing and fortifying their own company principles and brand. See that? way more complex than the previous paragraph, and no, this is not reachable by doing "SEO, or Branding, or Social Media Marketing, or what ever marketing service you get on your mailbox". This is reachable by understanding the market and people and by knowing who to connect and how to position some business in order to be the authority and expert in the field. In the end is the difference between choosing quality and trust instead of just "the cheaper".

And guess what? This understanding made me realise that I actually do not need to run after clients, or improve a sales funnel, or even my favourite "to improve my SEO to position myself on the internet" WOW!

I converted recently my agency, to an investment company, and if you ask me what I do with it, I do smart investments in other companies in order to improve their base value and networth. Not only improve their methods, their sales funnels, their products or whatever. I actually try to improve what really matters for a company. And no, you will not be my client, I don't want you to send a contact request and asking me to have a phone meeting or anything. If you are so interested to listen to more, invite me to lunch! I always like a good salad while expanding my network of interesting people.

Let's get back on track. So, apparently I am not considered anymore a marketer. I am an economist and business developer. Funny terms for someone who actually just does the real marketing concept for a living. And we are done. Please do not contact me because my mailbox is always getting messages of people who I never met and try to sell something. However I hope my deep thoughts help yours!
