Why I Still Love Tech...
Why I still love tech…
Are you a technology professional who is enduring the agony of burnout?
Do you love technology but hate the fact that you’re working in it?
(Does that second question sound strange?)
If I hadn’t experienced this phenomenon personally, I would have thought it totally weird.
But let me tell you a story…
Once upon a time, I worked as a Network Administrator for a growing janitorial company.
And during my 18 year tenure at this company, I was promoted to Director Of Information Systems–in title only.
(Anyone else already see a problem here?)
At first, the company was a great place to work. We worked hard, but had tons of fun.
As long as we accomplished our goals, everything was fine.
Then the leadership set a ridiculously high growth goal to grow the company by 100% within two years. (I’m not making this up.)
With the increasingly accelerating pace at which the company acquired business, so the workload increased exponentially.
And the leadership became hostile in their revenue driving tactics.?
Morale plummeted, and we, the employees were forced to exist at work in survival mode.
This killed the once upon a time positive work culture.?
Then, the company was sold to a private equity firm.
Things got worse. Much worse.
As a result, I began to despise working in tech. I hated everything about it. I wanted to get out in the worst way.
Then one day, the bully COO I ended up answering to bestowed a blessing in disguise unto me.?
He gave me an ultimatum: Either agree to 90% travel and 100 work weeks. Or turn in your resignation.
Seeing this as a way to escape, I chose the latter.
It took me 3 months to get the company out of my head.
It’s strange that even though I physically left the toxic organization, it still lived in my mind. Mentally, I was still working for the company.
(I cringed every time I heard my cell phone ring. Anyone else experience this?)
Sadly, months after I left the company, I still hated tech.
So, I wrote a young adult suspense novel and two novellas.?
Unfortunately, I didn’t have the book marketing figured out before I self published the novel and one of the novellas.?
(As you could imagine, sales didn’t exactly take off.)?

So, I worked in the gig economy through the pandemic.?
But once I was out of the toxic and deadly work environment, I gained clarity about why I thought I hated tech.
It wasn’t tech I hated. It was the company, and what it had turned into, that I hated.
Turns out, I still love tech very much. I especially love tinkering with it, like Tony Stark.
As a network admin, I was involved in building the company’s network infrastructure. But I was always interested in coding.
So, I took some time to study programming. But once I started looking into how to re-enter the tech workforce as a coder (and even as a network admin), I was quickly reminded of the many reasons I got out of tech in the first place.
So, then I had an epiphany…
Since I’m a writer, why don’t I write about tech?
(After all, I wrote three fiction works that garnered glowing reviews, despite the fact that they didn’t sell well.)
I love writing. And I love tech. With technology copywriting, I get the best of both worlds.?
I share this story for two reasons…
First, I want to encourage anyone who may be experiencing burnout working in the tech industry that technology may not be the problem.?
Take a look at what angers or depresses you. You might be surprised that it’s the corporate environment that’s burning you out.?
(This was the root of my burnout problem.)
Second, I want to take this opportunity to announce that I have decided to write copy (and content on an as needed basis) for the technology industry.
Sidebar…
I have a complete portfolio that contains copy assets for a fictitious short story writing course provided by a fictitious company.?
I created this portfolio as my project when I studied copywriting with Alex Cattoni and the Copy Posse.?
I created a portfolio centered around story because I have found that storytelling is necessary in all forms of business communications, especially persuasive copy.
And those of us who work in tech know, the dry and dull nature of technology writing could use a jumpstart fueled by the exhilaration of compelling stories.?
So, consider this my initial solicitation for anyone who may be looking for a technology copywriter.
Even though I wrote copy for a storytelling course, I can definitely handle writing about tech, for the purpose of selling it.
That being said, if you would like to work with someone who has a total of over 30 years of experience in technology, I would like to discuss any areas you need help with concerning your high-converting copy needs.?
From warplanes to Windows, I have worked in many areas of technology for a long time.?
I realize that I have been out of tech for several years, but I know I can write with striking clarity about any technology that exists today.?
And I can persuade your customers and prospects to happily purchase your technology offering.
If you want to work with someone with my extensive expertise and experience, and most importantly my passion for writing and technology, feel free to send me a DM.
Let’s talk about how I can best serve you.?
