In today’s world, job security isn’t what it used to be, and that reality hit me hard when I found myself at a crossroads later in life. After decades in the workforce, I faced an unsettling question: “Is this really it?” I knew I had skills, experience, and—perhaps most importantly—the drive to make a difference, both for myself and for others. The path I was on wasn’t providing the freedom, financial security, or satisfaction I craved. So, I took a leap and started my own business.
I also discovered that I was not alone. There were many people I have met along the way who had been laid off their last jobs in their 50's.
It inspired me to write my book: Fired at Fifty: Stop looking for work and discover what you were meant to do.
If you’re over 50 and considering a change, here’s why this could be the best decision you’ll ever make.
1. Redefining Success on Your Terms
By the time you’re 50, you’ve gained wisdom, experience, and a keen sense of what truly matters. These assets are invaluable, yet traditional jobs often box us into roles that don’t leverage our strengths. Starting a business allowed me to define my own path, build my own brand, and create a life that aligns with my values. If you’ve ever felt undervalued or limited by a job, consider this: starting your own business gives you the power to shape your own success, without compromise.
2. Creating Financial Freedom and Stability
The job market can be volatile, especially as we age. Starting my own business gave me the ability to take control of my financial future instead of relying on a company’s bottom line. I wanted to build something that could support me not just for the next few years but into retirement and beyond. For many of us over 50, passive income and financial freedom are priorities. If you’re tired of feeling like you’re one restructuring away from financial uncertainty, entrepreneurship could be your answer.
3. The Flexibility to Live Life Fully
One of the greatest benefits of owning a business is the freedom to control your time. After 50, time becomes even more precious. Owning my own business allowed me to set my schedule, prioritize what mattered most, and focus on the kind of work that felt meaningful.
Imagine having the flexibility to work from anywhere, at times that suit you, without sacrificing income or productivity. That freedom is empowering, and it’s something I’m passionate about sharing with others in my age group.
4. Turning Decades of Experience into Real Impact
By midlife, you’ve accumulated an incredible amount of knowledge, wisdom, and perspective. These aren’t just assets; they’re powerful tools that can help you stand out in a crowded market. I wanted to leverage my skills to help others, especially those who felt stuck in traditional jobs. By becoming a LinkedIn Marketing Strategist, I now help people build a brand and an income that’s independent of the typical corporate path.
Don’t let your experience sit on a shelf; put it to work in a way that has a lasting impact.
5. Breaking Free from Traditional Constraints
Society often tells us that entrepreneurship is for the young. But that’s simply not true. In fact, many of the most successful entrepreneurs are over 50 because they bring a level of discipline, focus, and insight that younger generations haven’t yet acquired. When I started my own business, I learned quickly that there was no “right age” for entrepreneurship.
The only prerequisite was a commitment to change.
Take the Leap While You Can
I took a leap at a time in my life when many people are thinking about winding down. I saw it as my chance to truly create a life that was financially, emotionally, and personally fulfilling. If you’re over 50 and feeling stuck, the opportunity is there for you too. Don’t let fear of age or experience hold you back. This could be your moment to redefine what’s possible, find financial security, and make an impact on your own terms.
In 2012, when I was in the midst of writing my book, I checked Stats Canada and discovered that in 2012, 54% of new businesses in Canada that year were started by people over 50!!!
Fast forward to today...
As we age, and reach the age of 65 (retirement) many are discovering that the pensions they were expecting are far below what they need to pay bills.
62% of the Canadian population are living paycheque to paycheque with nothing left to invest for retirement. Thus 62% of our population in Canada are not properly prepared for retirement.
More and more seniors today are searching for ways to boost their pensions by starting an online business that is pre-built for them.
If you are looking at starting a "pension boosting" business online and have no tech, like me, I have found the perfect blueprint!
Starting a business after 50 isn’t easy, but it’s rewarding in ways I never imagined. The most powerful message I can leave you with is this: there’s never been a better time.
Put "ready" in the comments if you want to see the blueprint I am using. I would love to share it with you!
Cheering your success!
