Why I Read
Orhan Pamuk said, “I read a book one day and my whole life was changed.” Unlike Orhan Pamuk, I don’t read a book one day but I love to read. Reading has become a new addiction for past couple of years. This reading is different from whatever we read online or while browsing. I am referring to a book, an actual book. I love the feeling of holding a book, read it and flip the pages.
When I read it, I mostly get lost into its world, just like Alice in her wonderland. This has become my new hideout. Sometimes I just wonder what is the reason, why do I like to read? In the world where people are just chasing the goal for more money or just prefer to party and gossip, I was inclined to build a passion. When I was frail at spoken English, I used to admire people who sound charming and celestial. I use to watch uncounted talk shows and followed well-spoken people.
I realized much later, it was not about English, I was chasing knowledge and not the language alone. Books not only give knowledge but share the experience of the person and author’s life. Whether it’s fiction or non-fiction there is a story, there are people and situations, they are the teacher. Whether it’s the Blue Umbrella or Ikigai, the messages hidden in the book make you travel the experiences and their world.
Here I am listing some of the observations you can bring in your life with reading.
Books are the best friends – I am not apologetic if I say books are the only best friends you got. Books would enrich your mind with author’s wisdom. You explore with a book. The author makes you relive the situation and come over to the other end with cognizance.
Focus - What happens when you read? You learn to focus. It enhances mind to build an imagination, it creates a world within. You leant to move word by word, paragraph by paragraph and page by page. You practice patience.
Be with yourself – While reading you cannot be distracted and you just enjoy your own company with the book. This brings you close to yourself.

Knowledge is power – There is an inevitable quality which you develop with every book you read and keep getting bigger with each drop of knowledge on a subject. Knowledge is one clear demarcation of excellence. More you have, the more power you got.
Life learning – Although life is long and life is a good teacher, you don’t need to learn every lesson from your own life. You can read a book and gain the experiences of the author’s life too, so in one life you gain experience of more than one life.
Good language – This is an obvious quality you build as you read books over books. You not only increase your vocabulary but learn to express yourself in eloquent manner.
I just wish people to read more and more. The benefits are endless and impeccable. Let me close till I write my next article with an amazing quote by Stephen King, “Books are a uniquely portable magic.”

3 年Loved the article, Vaishali, especially the distinction you make between the language and knowledge! ?? ?? One definitely does not need a perfect hold over language to be knowledgeable. The development of language is a by-product of reading. Being a book lover myself, I agree with your views.
