Why I "Network with LinkedIn"

I'm writing today to briefly share my story of how I came to use LinkedIn as a sales and marketing tool.

I'm sure you remember in September 2008 the world experienced one of the worst stock market crashes ever. At the time I was employed as sales and logistics manager for a courier/delivery service. During the recession no one was seeing sales people. I couldn't schedule a meeting. So in January 2009 I created a LinkedIn profile and started reaching out to clients and prospects in hopes of connecting and creating relationships on a personal and professional level. It worked. Companies that previously wouldn't take my phone calls or allow a 'cold-call' visit began scheduling appointments with me.

Why? In a word, credibility. Your LinkedIn profile allows people to learn about you before they connect. They can see common interests, social status, work ethic, your skills and endorsements - and that builds trust!

In 2011 I was asked by a friend speak at her "social media" networking meeting. I told her I'm not on social media and she replied, "You're always on LinkedIn, just tell how you are using it." After my presentation sales managers from two companies asked me to share with their sales teams about how I was cultivating leads with LinkedIn. That's how I began teaching others to do what I do on LinkedIn; build relationships, cultivate leads, and turn prospects and connections into clients.
