Why I Movember – Because it's about more than "no shave November"
Undoubtedly, thousands of men showed up to work this week with a beard or mustache exclaiming “it’s no shave November!”… And I get it, an excuse to save a few minutes each morning is something we could all use. But if you really take the time to learn about the Movember Foundation, the real foundation that started it all, it may just move you to do more – because that’s exactly what it did for me.
Movember is a month to raise awareness for men’s health issues. What started as 30 guys in Australia in 2003 trying to “bring the mustache back in style” has turned into a global movement that in 2014 had more than 700k participants in 21 countries and raised nearly $90 Million.
Rather than a single disease or cause, the Movember Foundation has four main areas of focus: Prostate Cancer, Testicular Cancer, Poor Mental Health and Physical Inactivity. Here are some of the other things that I found out about the foundation that pushed me to participate:
You know where your money is going. The Movember Foundation publishes financial reports each year with full disclosure so you know how your money is being spent. You get to see the impact your donation has and can donate confidently knowing the money is well spent.
They do more than just research. Of course, a cure for prostate or testicular cancer is important. But what about those already afflicted? Movember funds thousands of programs that help people living with these diseases with the challenges of everyday life.
They keep the administrative cost low. Even non-profits have to pay to keep the lights on, and process those credit card donations, etc. But Movember does a great job of spending money where it counts and is well below the recommended 25% cap for non-profit administrative and fundraising costs.
Overall, I understand there are tons of organizations out there doing great things. But by donating to the Movember Foundation you can help make a positive impact, be sure that your money is well spent and help not only with just research, but also help those who suffer a lot more than a month. They wake up and deal with their disease or ailment EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.
Donate if you can. https://moteam.co/kforce-movember
