Why I LOVE under-developed countries

If you've never stepped foot in a country that doesn't have the convenience of digital ordering, contactless delivery or same-day shipping for a fluffy pillow for your neck, you are actually missing out.

I remember seeing commercials featuring these countries...the poverty, the starvation, the lack of resources and money to have a 'quality life'. I used to donate to organizations to help build wells for better drinking water and sponsor a child for $.30 a day to help them have a solid meal, education, and basic healthcare. And I must admit when I started traveling the world and visiting these various countries whether in Asia or Africa I felt bad for them. 'If only they had better education or opportunities then they could have a better life' I would tell myself. Not to discredit the realities of economic challenges and inadequate living conditions, but one thing that I didn't understand until much later in my travels was one thing that developing countries or dare I say America seem to lack...authenticity.

When I was walking down a sidewalk/ dirt road somewhere in Western Africa, I remember reading what is known as a signboard. I would see these signs for PLUMBER and then the phone number. No picture..no logo..no list of services and definitely no website. I would say to myself, 'How are they getting customers with this kind of marketing?' I spent a good deal of upwards of 6 months at one point, in trying to convince businesses how important marketing is. Saying things like 'Who knows what you do?' or 'How do your customers find you without a website or social media account?' And after these highly counter-productive conversations, I decided to cease my efforts. 'They just don't get it,' I said to myself. If they had better education then they'd see the value in business development and marketing and a consultant (like me) for that fact. But suddenly one day it all clicked.

What these underdeveloped or maybe a better term is differently developed countries have is realness. If their product or service is not of value to their audience whether it's within a 1 km radius or less then they wouldn't have a business. They didn't need to have elaborate wording, AI-inspired pictures on their website or captivating infographics on their social media. All they needed was a good product or service and that speaks for itself. Wow...what a contrast to the other side of the spectrum. I've seen companies falsify testimonials, create fake clients whom they've manufactured fake websites and fake emails. Using photoshop for their 'client' pictures and ChatGPT verbiage for the reviews. Inflating their numbers of productivity in their slide decks and taking a 2 year worth of experience and making it look like a decade. And I have to admit I have worked with companies like these and helped to 'position' them better for their market. But what I've learned after 18 years of global business management and collaboration is this... your value speaks for itself. If you are really the BEST software developer out there then show us!!! Show us, your target market, what you can do. If you are an expert in US healthcare RCM then tell me something that a typical healthcare executive wouldn't know. Wow us with your expertise. Sadly it's hard to know which companies are the real deal and who are just really good at content creation. This is one of the reasons why I personally spent weeks, months sometimes years in various countries really understanding where the value lies. Who's really making an impact, serving their clients or even having the skills and grit to do so and who is just really good at faking it until they make it.

So if you're one of those who created an amazing fancy and yes I'll say it fluff-filled website... stop it. Tap into what you really know how to do, love to do and run with that. Stop copying your neighbor who appears to be successful and align yourself with what your purpose is and then your value will speak for itself. And if you're on the other side of the coin, seeking business collaborations and partners who can help carry the burden of your operations but unsure who is legit and who isn't, well I only have one thing to say...letscallciara.
