As a leader, I often draw inspiration from various fields, and one of my favourites is the NFL (also known as American Football). The National Football League isn’t just a source of thrilling entertainment; it’s a masterclass in building and maintaining high-performing teams. Here are some key insights from the NFL that can be applied to the business world.


Equality and Fair Play

One of the most remarkable aspects of the NFL is its commitment to equality. The league’s salary cap ensures that all teams have a fair shot at success, preventing wealthier teams from monopolizing talent. This principle of equality fosters a competitive environment where every team has the opportunity to excel. In business, creating a level playing field for all employees, regardless of their background, can lead to a more motivated and innovative workforce. When everyone has an equal chance to contribute and succeed, the entire organization benefits. The drafting process, for me, is when we bring on a new cohort of graduates to our programs - we literally draft them from the best universities in the country to join our team and grow and develop

The NFL’s success hinges on the seamless integration of offense, defence, and special teams. Each phase of the game requires a unique set of skills and strategies, yet they must all work together harmoniously to achieve victory. This reliance on a mix of disciplines is a powerful lesson for businesses. High-performing companies understand the importance of cross-functional collaboration. When departments such as marketing, sales, and product development work in sync, the organization can achieve remarkable results. Just like in football, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It's also about recognising that it takes the contribution of all to get that ultimate success. Being great at scoring touchdowns is worthless if you let the other team score more on you - similarly, driving high revenue sales while bleeding out on costs is not a winning formula


Leadership and Management

Coaching and general management are critical to an NFL team’s success. Coaches develop game plans, motivate players, and make real-time decisions that can change the course of a game. General managers build the team by scouting talent, managing contracts, and making strategic trades. In the business world, effective leadership and management are equally crucial. Leaders must inspire their teams, make informed decisions, and adapt to changing circumstances. A strong management team can identify and nurture talent, ensuring that the organization remains competitive and resilient. It is also an interesting dynamic on the role of leader as coach versus leader as an assembler. I find I often have to switch between the two roles as I build and rebuild teams (the GM role), and then drive performance and strategy from the team (the Coach role).

The NFL is constantly evolving, with teams and players striving to improve every year. New strategies, technologies, and training methods are continually being developed to gain a competitive edge. This relentless pursuit of excellence is a valuable lesson for businesses.
