Jonathon Jay Joins Hoxton Capital Management: Leading Growth and Innovation

I'm thrilled to welcome back Jonathon Jay to the Financial Planner Life podcast. Jonathon, a Chartered CII and Certified Financial Planner (CFP) with the CISI, has recently joined Hoxton Capital Management as the Head of UK Financial Planning, marking a significant milestone in his career and a promising new chapter for Hoxton Capital.

A Career Rooted in Financial Planning

Jonathon’s financial planning career began at Investec, where he served as an Associate Director. His role evolved into a wealth planner position, combining investment management with financial planning. Despite a successful career at Investec, Jonathon always had an entrepreneurial itch, which led him to establish his own firm alongside a corporate finance business. This venture offered him a steep learning curve and invaluable insights into the financial planning industry.

Entrepreneurial Ventures and Challenges

Running his firm allowed Jonathon to explore the intricacies of financial planning businesses. He learned to strategise, anticipate industry trends, and understand what financial planning should look like in the future. Despite the challenges posed by the economic climate, particularly the disruptions caused by the budget changes in 2022, Jonathon's entrepreneurial spirit thrived. His experience with corporate finance, helping business owners exit their ventures and manage newfound wealth, added depth to his financial planning expertise.

About Hoxton Capital Management

Founded by Chris Ball Hoxton Capital Management has rapidly grown to manage $2 billion in assets. The firm is known for its innovative approach and international presence, with licenses in six different jurisdictions. Chris Ball’s leadership has been instrumental in driving the firm’s growth and success. Under his guidance, Hoxton has made significant strides in the UK market through strategic acquisitions, including multiple UK firms in 2023, enhancing their footprint and service offerings.

Jonathon's Vision for Hoxton Capital

Jonathon’s move to Hoxton Capital is driven by a shared vision of growth and excellence. Jonathon aims to lead Hoxton’s UK division to new heights by focusing on core client acquisition and relationship skills. His strategy involves leveraging Hoxton’s robust technological infrastructure, including the Hoxton app and their advanced CRM system, ‘Matrix’. These tools are designed to streamline adviser-client interactions, improve efficiency, and enhance the overall client experience.

"For me, the opportunity has never been about money. It's been about reaching as wide an audience as possible with lifestyle financial planning," Jonathon explains.
"We're not just focusing on financial numbers; it's about understanding clients' aspirations and helping them achieve their life goals," Jonathon emphasises.

Pathway: Building the Future of Financial Planning

Hoxton Capital Management is also investing in the future of financial planning through its 'Pathway' programme. This academy takes trainee wealth managers through a comprehensive development journey to become fully qualified financial planners. The programme emphasises essential client acquisition and relationship skills, preparing advisers to provide top-tier financial advice either in the UK or internationally.

Opportunities for UK IFAs

One of the most exciting aspects of joining Hoxton Capital is the opportunity for UK IFAs to engage in cross-border advice. Hoxton’s international footprint allows advisers to work with clients across different jurisdictions without giving up their existing client base. This opens up significant opportunities for advisers who wish to expand their practice internationally or even relocate abroad while maintaining their UK client relationships.

"The ability to work internationally and still retain your UK clients is a game-changer for many advisers," says Jonathon.

Strategic Plans and Opportunities

Under Jonathon Jay CFP? leadership, Hoxton Capital Management plans to grow its UK presence through strategic acquisitions and by attracting top talent. The firm is looking to acquire businesses from retiring advisers or those struggling with the administrative burdens of running a firm. This strategy not only expands Hoxton’s client base but also ensures that clients receive enhanced services from highly skilled advisers.

Hoxton Capital is also creating a home for entrepreneurial advisers who want to grow their client base without the constraints of traditional employment. With attractive packages and a supportive environment, Hoxton aims to become the go-to firm for ambitious advisers.

"Hoxton offers a unique environment where entrepreneurial advisers can truly thrive," Jonathon notes.

Emphasising Client-Centric Financial Planning

At the heart of Hoxton Capital’s strategy is a commitment to client-centric financial planning. Jonathon and his team believe in deep, meaningful conversations with clients to understand their life goals and tailor financial plans accordingly. This approach, often referred to as lifestyle planning, goes beyond traditional financial advice to help clients achieve their dreams and live fulfilling lives.

"Financial planning is not about the numbers. It's about understanding what clients want and need out of their future," Jonathon emphasises. This philosophy aligns perfectly with Hoxton Capital’s mission to provide holistic and personalised financial advice.

Looking Ahead

With Jonathon Jay at the helm of UK financial planning, Chris Ball steering the company’s overall vision, and the support of innovative programs like Pathway ( Trainee Planner ), Hoxton Capital Management is poised for significant growth and transformation. The firm’s innovative approach, combined with Jonathon’s expertise and Chris’s leadership, promises to redefine financial planning in the UK. Their shared vision of client-centric, technology-driven financial advice sets the stage for a future where more people can achieve their financial goals and live their desired lifestyles.

"The collaboration between Jonathon and Hoxton Capital marks an exciting journey towards redefining financial planning in the UK," says Sam Oakes, Financial Planner Life host & Head of Creative at Hoxton Capital.

As Jonathon, Chris, and the Hoxton team embark on this exciting journey, the financial planning industry can expect to see a dynamic shift towards more meaningful, impactful financial advice that truly puts clients first. Together, they are committed to building a brand that not only attracts top talent but also sets new standards for excellence in financial planning.
