Why I hire engineers who are efficient and empathic

When one builds and runs a highly driven technology team, no two days are the same.

One of my current priorities as CTO is to continue building a team of engineers that are equal parts highly efficient and emphatic. Why?

I find camaraderie with people who are able to work efficiently in a climate of ever changing priorities. These people also tend to hold a non traditional approach to leadership. We encourage our leaders to behave more like shepherds and school teachers, rather than authoritarian generals.

What do I mean exactly??

If one were to look at the decisions an engineer has to make with regards to writing code and architectural decisions, he or she has to try and solve a resource optimisation problem. Given finite amounts of time, money, effort and knowledge, what is the optimal mix to solve the problem at hand??

On top of that, how might said engineer do so while working within a squad of equally driven and talented engineers? Empathy. Being able to write great code is one thing, but one who makes the team write better code trumps the former at Supahands.
