Why I Gave Myself the Title of Creative Director / Art Director

Why I Gave Myself the Title of Creative Director / Art Director

As the founder of Black Eagle Marketing, I've decided to embrace the dual title of Creative Director / Art Director. This decision stems from my diverse experience and skill set that spans both the strategic and hands-on aspects of creative work. Here's why this title fits and why it matters:

Straddling Two Worlds

I've had the unique opportunity to work on both sides of the creative fence:

  • -As a manager, I've led teams, organized concepts, conducted research, and overseen implementation.
  • On the production side, I've been in the trenches, creating assets, developing brand guidelines, designing layouts and templates, crafting logos, shooting professional video, writing press releases and writing blog posts.

This versatility allows me to understand the full scope of creative projects, from high-level strategy to nitty-gritty execution.

A Track Record of Success

It's important to note that I'm not just theorizing about these roles. As a working professional, I've successfully completed hundreds of projects—honestly, it's more like the lower thousands. This extensive portfolio spans a wide range of industries, clients, and creative challenges, providing me with a depth of experience that informs both my strategic decisions and hands-on work.

The Confidence Conundrum

Starting Black Eagle Marketing was partly born out of necessity. Despite my skills and experience, I struggled to get serious consideration in traditional job roles. This challenge may have stemmed from a lack of confidence, but it's crucial to understand that:

  • Lack of confidence doesn't equate to lack of skill
  • It doesn't diminish drive or creative energy
  • It doesn't negate the ability to generate meaningful ideas

The Role of Upbringing

Our childhood experiences significantly shape our adult selves, including our professional identities. For many creatives, early life experiences can influence how we perceive ourselves and our abilities. It's possible that my own upbringing played a role in my initial struggles with confidence, despite my capabilities and extensive project history.

Embracing Both Roles

By adopting the Creative Director / Art Director title, I'm acknowledging my ability to:

1. Provide high-level creative vision and strategy

2. Execute detailed design work and content creation

3. Bridge the gap between conceptual thinking and practical implementation

This dual role allows me to offer clients a comprehensive creative service, combining big-picture thinking with hands-on expertise—all backed by a substantial portfolio of completed projects.

Moving Forward

Giving myself this title is more than just a label—it's a statement of intent and capability. It reflects my commitment to:

  • Continuous learning and skill development
  • Embracing both leadership and hands-on roles
  • Providing clients with a unique blend of strategic and practical creative services

By acknowledging my diverse skill set and experiences, including the thousands of projects I've successfully delivered, I'm positioning Black Eagle Marketing to offer a holistic approach to creative projects, one that understands both the forest and the trees.

In the end, this title isn't about ego or false bravado. It's about recognizing the value of my experiences, skills, and perspective. It's about having the confidence to say, "I can do this, and I can do it well," even if that confidence has been a journey in itself.

As we move forward, Black Eagle Marketing will continue to evolve, always striving to deliver creative solutions that are both visionary and grounded in practical execution. Because sometimes, the best person to bridge the gap between Creative Director and Art Director is someone who's lived in both worlds and has the project history to prove it.
