Why I Do What I Do: Empowering Education Across Villages

A Journey Rekindled

In 2006, my educational journey seemed destined for an abrupt end. Transitioning from Uganda to Kenya, I was on the brink of becoming just another dropout statistic. But then, my grandmother, a fervent advocate for education, stepped in. Her unwavering belief in the power of learning reignited my own aspirations. By the time I was reintegrated into school, stepping into seventh grade, I had a renewed sense of purpose.

The challenges I faced have taught me a valuable lesson: enduring hardships equips us with the resilience and insight to overcome them and aid others facing similar obstacles.

A Defining Moment

One defining moment came one early morning on my way to school when I encountered 50 children who had been sent home because they couldn't afford the 1-dollar exam fee. Driven by an impulse to help, I returned with them and paid their fees. This spontaneous act of kindness was the seed that grew into our ongoing One Dollar Back to School Campaign.

EmpowerWave Mentorship Program

Each year, this School Vist Program initiative takes us to over 50 schools, where we work alongside a passionate community dedicated to giving back through mentorship. Our mission extends beyond mentorship; we're also committed to breaking down barriers to education and cultivating environments where all children can thrive. This year, our focus is on 20 schools in Busia County, Kenya.

Skills Beyond Books: Hawi Threads of Change

Our efforts are multifaceted. Through our Hawi Threads of Change project, we empower students with practical skills like crocheting, turning craft into an educational and financial resource.

Additionally, in alignment with Kenya's goal to plant and nurture over 2 billion seedlings, our EduGreen project incorporates tree planting into our school visits. Last year, we planted 50 trees per school; this year, we aim to plant 100 seedlings per school, doubling our impact.

EduConference: Fostering Sustainable Partnerships

Moreover, on June 29th, 2024, we are set to host the EduConference, bringing together more than 250 teachers and educational stakeholders to discuss "Sustainability and Partnership in Schools." We've observed a significant gap in sustainable models within schools that support operations and ensure students remain enrolled.
