Why I Chose GotPhoto: The Importance of Culture, Support and Mental Well-Being. My Journey thus far.

A Moment of Reflection

Over the years, Ive learned that finding my next job or career move shouldnt be just about the company name, salary, or job title. It’s about finding the right fit—both for myself and for the company. Since the pandemic, Ive faced significant challenges, from being laid off multiple times in just four years to taking risks on roles that I hoped would be the perfect long-term fit. Each step taught me something valuable, but I realized that this time, I needed to approach my job search with greater intention, particularly as I transitioned back to Berlin. I knew that finding the right company was going to be crucial—not just for my professional growth, but also for my mental well-being. That’s what I want to share with you today.

Finding the Right Place in a Challenging Job Market

When I decided to return to Berlin, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t panic. The job market was tough, and the doubts crept in: Is this the right decision? Should I just take any job I can get? I knew these were important questions, and whatever decision I made, I had to commit to it.

I’ve seen many people in similar situations succumb to panic, taking on roles just to get by until the market improves. I’ve heard it time and again—“I’ll just find something for now and wait for the right role.” But my question is: why wait? Even in a difficult job market, you should never compromise. There are amazing companies out there that are the perfect fit for you right now.

As I started my job search, I found myself in about 15 different recruitment processes, which quickly became overwhelming. I realized I needed to narrow my focus to find the companies that genuinely excited me. I dug deep into resources like Glassdoor, Reddit (not my favorite place, but helpful!), and reached out to my network for insights. When GotPhoto came up, it was through multiple connections who all pointed me to a post by Elisa, our Chief People Officer, where they were raving about the company culture and its impressive NPS score. GotPhoto might not have the biggest brand in Berlin, but it certainly had a strong reputation for culture—and that was enough to tip the scales for me.

Why GotPhoto Stood Out

When I decided to zero in on GotPhoto, I knew I had to ensure it was the right company for me. The interview process wasn’t just about them evaluating me—I was equally focused on evaluating them. I needed to know that I would be joining a company with a strong culture, one that supported personal and professional development, and most importantly, a place where I could thrive mentally. This was my top priority, especially given the mental challenges I knew I would face transitioning back to Berlin. Those who know me, know just how challenging that journey was.

Throughout the interview process, I asked the questions that mattered most to me to ensure this next step would set me up for success. Here are some of the questions I asked:

  • Can you provide examples of how collaboration and teamwork are encouraged within the company?
  • How does the company define and encourage work-life balance? Are there specific policies or practices in place?
  • How does leadership ensure open and transparent communication with employees? Transparency is key!
  • What do current employees love about working here, and what do they wish could be improved?

These questions can help you confirm that the company you are applying for, in my case GotPhoto, is not only a place that values mental well-being and work-life balance but also a company where I can be my true, authentic self.

The Importance of Choosing the Right Company

Choosing the right company is everything. It can be daunting, but taking the time to assess, review, reflect, and ask the right questions will help you find a company supporting your long-term career growth and authentic self. Authenticity in the workplace is vital; when you can be yourself, you’re more likely to thrive in your role because you’re in the right environment for you to succeed.

So, if there’s one takeaway from this blog, it’s this: never settle, and don’t panic. The right job might take a little longer to find, but it will be worth it a thousand times over. And if you do find yourself in a role that isn’t the right fit, remember that it’s okay. It doesn’t mean you’ve failed; it just means that the environment isn’t set up for you to flourish.

Joining GotPhoto was the best decision I could have made. It’s not just the right place for me professionally—it’s the right place for my continued personal growth. A great example of this would be that for the first time across 4 companies, I received a 3 month 360 review during probation that provided me with the support and direction needed to continue to grow and develop. Why don't more companies do this? I know personally being in a probation period can fill someone with a lot of anxiety.

Final Thoughts

Thus far at GotPhoto I’m able to be my true, authentic self, which has made me more confident in my role. My mental health is improving, and while it’s still a journey, I know I’m in the right place with the support system I need to succeed both for myself and for the business.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story. I hope it resonates with you. Remember, the right company is out there—you just need to find it.

Love this! Being able to show up authentically at the workplace is so important, and yet so many employers still expect people to fit in a specific "Schublade". Happy to hear you found the right match ??
