Why I chose the cocktail party metaphor

Why I chose the cocktail party metaphor

In my last communication I let you know about how many people were mad at me about the cocktail party, and some for valid reasons!?

?

I originally chose it because there’s one thing all of my active reach outs always had in common.

?

And this is the reason that they worked so well!?

?

The reason why I got the seven quantum leap opportunities I did.

?

What they had in common was that:

?

I never expected or required a yes.

?

I did them as a YES to myself!?

?

And then real-life yeses for awesome things followed!

?

But I know in my bones that if I had been even a little bitter about getting a no, "a not right now" or even a no response.

?

I’d never have continued on the path.?

?

And I thought about it like this:

?

When someone buys you a drink at a bar, if there’s any expectation attached to it, like they now want your number because they bought you the drink, or worse they are hoping you’ll sleep with them because they bought you a drink, that is a NO GO and it’s gross right??

?

Same with the reach outs. You can’t do it with ANY?expectation.

?

You have to be graciously respectful and even appreciative of a no.? ?

And a nonresponse can’t get you mad either.?

?

When we reach out to people just like if we buy someone a drink, it has to be from genuine kindness and care.?

?

No expectations.?

?

A few other reasons:

?

So it’s not about the “drinks” , it's definitely not about alcohol. And it’s not even about cocktails.

?

??It’s about the personalization and love and care that can be put into something for an individual person.?

?

??It can be their favorite Starbucks.?

?

??It can be just knowing that they don’t like the big conglomerates like Starbucks and they prefer to only support local coffee shops!?

?

??It can simply be a gift for someone that you know they will like because you know enough about them to know.?

?

It’s not a generic gift you bring to a secret Santa that “everyone will like.”? ?

It’s a deeply personalized thing.

?

And a cocktail is that.

?

It’s personalized.

?

But who cares about the cocktail?

?

What opportunities do you want to get a yes from??

?

Let’s discover them, create them, and start getting them on the cocktail party class!?

?

Only a few days to get your ticket!?

Look at all the people who have already jumped in! So you’re in good company.

Love this Natalie. I thought the cocktail party metaphor was great from the beginning but I love the way you describe the “no expectations” aspect. It’s so true as well.

Natalie, I love your perspective on this, Personal touch and genuine kindness in outreach can truly transform the process. Your analogy highlights the importance of creating meaningful connections without any strings attached.
