Why I am Passionate About VoltaRock

Working in energy and technology is quite a journey. Over the last 12 months since starting my first direct-to-consumer business, I’ve noticed several differences compared to my previous B2B experiences. I want to share why we continue our mission in my own words.

As a person, I strongly believe in pluralism, acceptance, and empathy for differing opinions. This is my default position: I prefer to build not just on my own thoughts but on what I hear, observe, and distil from others. From there, I generate a hypothesis and test it with people whose perspectives differ from mine to validate the solution.

I let the idea drive the process, presenting myself as responsible for it. This approach has worked to some degree, though I’ve been called na?ve and immature and criticised for not focusing enough on monetisation. I respect these opinions and, to some extent, agree with them.

My experiences at VoltaRocks taught me that everyone should feel free to express their thoughts without judgment (within reason). When I receive incredulous messages or opposition due to differing ideals or beliefs, I realise it’s on me to communicate better. My message might be polarised by my own views.

I believe your home is your castle, your own domain. In the larger context, differences should be embraced, accepted, and encouraged.

I believe in a greener, independent future where we have a variety of options, not just the same choices with different labels. I truly think we should all contribute to the greater good while retaining our independence. I understand this is a somewhat na?ve vision, but it needs to be communicated inclusively.

This is why VoltaRocks was started. While I believe we are in a climate emergency and need to act, I understand that perspectives on this issue vary. Ultimately, it’s up to each individual to define their stance, not me or us.

VoltaRocks was born to make something bland, a little more fun, a little easier, and free up time and money for other things. Our mission is to save you money on electricity and make Home Energy Independence a reality, whether or not you believe in sustainable living. We hope you believe in the idea that no company, business, or politics should have the power to turn off your lights.

I think all founders receive criticism of some sort along the way from others. But if the voice of the customer keeps calling praise, then you know who to listen to and who to respectfully ignore ??.
