Why I Am Joining Offset.Earth

Why I Am Joining Offset.Earth

In March this year at SXSW I sat in the garden of a bar with my friend Ian, and he told me how he had been shocked at the reality of the climate crisis we face. We sat there, privileged people enjoying the sights and sounds of Austin, Texas and I agreed that we should be giving our time and resources to this cause. I was well aware of the news, but blissfully ignoring it hoping it would go away as it seemed too big to address alone.

As some of you know, when I left Primark I aimed to work 3 days a week leaving the remaining time to invest in projects that have soul, make a difference to people and I mean that in a real sense not a lofty Silicon Valley startup mentality.

Six weeks after SXSW I’m sat in an office in London with Elliot, Alex and Ian and we’re discussing Offset Earth. The speed of this is incredible and reflective of the need for change to protect the planet that we inhabit today. The climate crisis is real, and acting fast to make a difference is vital. Sitting in countless meetings talking about it won’t help, and many companies are doing just that waiting for the ‘sustainability trend’ to pass. It won’t, because if we don’t act we are screwed.

So what is Offset.Earth? It’s a subscription service that lets you pay a small fee (from £4.50 / month) to become Carbon Positive. Neutralise your carbon footprint and then some. We plant trees (50,000 so far) and fund gold standard climate change projects around the world. In just a couple of clicks, you can be up and running, watch your forest grow on your profile page and be updated on what we’re doing. You can even offset your whole family and your pets.

I’m a realist, I’m can't rule out flying on holiday in the future, I’m not going to stop buying clothes (although I buy a lot less now, like most people I know) and I’m still going to have a footprint from being alive. However, I do believe we can consume less and try and ensure that whatever we take out we put back in.

So, for the future, I’ll be giving time every week to build Offset.Earth into a successful business that creates change, fast. We’re committed that nearly 90% of the subscription costs go directly to climate crisis focused projects.

Within the next two weeks, we’ll launch a B2B model where you will be able to create a carbon positive workforce in just a few clicks.

Make your own coffee this morning and spend the money planting 12 trees that will be here for decades to come.

Peace and Love.

Great work, appreciate your efforts. FYI not flying is one of the single most impactful things you can do as an individual to reduce your emissions. I've not flown for over 10 years, why not try it for just one? https://www.flightfree.co.uk/ All the best
