Why I ALWAYS Use My PTO

Based on a recent article posted in the Washington Post, "More than half of U.S. workers ― 54 percent — reported feeling guilty about taking vacation time either sometimes, often or always, according to a survey of more than 2,000 full-time workers in the United States by TurnKey Vacation Rentals."
Let me tell you, NOT THIS U.S. WORKER. There are three things in life I prioritize:
- My family.
- My skincare routine.
- My PTO. I always use my PTO.
When I am asked why I have stayed with State Farm for 6 years and counting, my answer remains the same>> Work-Life Balance!! I am so appreciative to work for a company that affords its employees a generous PTO bank, and I take full advantage. Because of my time at State Farm I have taken a well deserved vacation every year (sometimes 2...or 3...or 4!) I've traveled domestically and internationally, all on the job!
International: Ireland, Scotland, Iceland, Italy, France, Greece, China, and Mexico.
Domestic: New Orleans (LA), Taos (NM), New York City (NY), Los Angeles (CA), Marion (AR), Savannah (GA), Atlanta (GA), Phoenix (AZ), Chicago (IL).
In 2020, the idea of travelling is challenging and intimidating at times. However, there are still ways to take time off, safely and with intention. Whether it be a "staycation" where you live or a road trip to a nearby town.
I love that I have the chance to explore a passion for learning other cultures and the opportunity to share that with my co-workers. State Farm supports my ability to live an authentic life while growing as an individual. I wish I could say this sentiment was common amongst my friends who work at other companies, but I often hear about the guilt and headache that is often associated with time off. Fear of the dreaded "email jail" or the all too common, "I have too much going on." At State Farm you can throw all that out the window. I have always had the support of management and my peers to keep the ball rolling when I am out. Better yet, when I come back (refreshed and sun kissed), the first question I am asked is "How was your vacation?"
All in all, find or build a company/role where you can balance all of your passions. Whether that be family, travel, or a side hustle/something else. There is always a place for you. In the famous words of Caroline A. Wanga (Cultural Architect, Target) "Who you are is who you are. If you cannot be who you are, where you are. You change where you are, not who you are. "

4 年Absolutely agree! I have been with the company over 26 years, and after 15 yrs realized work life balance is most important, so I was a late learner. My family raised me to work hard and then work harder and vacation is used at retirement. When it comes to family you cant get that time back. When it comes to time for yourself, you have to be intentional to protect that. My leadership and coworkers do all they can to make sure when I am gone I can be gone to renew and refresh. Now I am still not 100% there yet, but I am loving Lauren's example!
