Why and How to Create Multiple Streams of Income

Here's how to create multiple income streams while giving greater value to our clients.?

Over my 50 plus years in business, I've learned that relying on a single income source is risky. Whether it's a coach or a consultant or an entrepreneur or a business owner, putting all our eggs in one basket can leave us vulnerable when the unexpected happens. And let's face it, in business, the unexpected is often just around the corner. My watchword for business is this, and I've used it for so many years. It is the word exposure.

That's why I'm such a strong supporter of the idea of creating multiple income streams. It's not just about financial securities. Oh, that's definitely important. It's about opening opportunities and being flexible and giving ourselves the freedom to change and grow. So in this video, I'm gonna share with you some of the proven strategies I've used to diversify our income. We'll look at coaching, consulting, digital products, and other ideas that can help you maximise your earnings while reducing your dependency on any one source.

What does diversification mean in this context??

Well, let's think about it in this way. My financial adviser in every meeting I have with him is always going on to me. He's really stressing it's so important to have a diversified investment portfolio. So it makes sense that we apply that same principle to our income streams.?

It just makes good business sense. Here's why:

  1. Risk Mitigation: If one income stream takes a hit, we've got others to fall back on. I've seen this time and time again over all the years. During economic downturns, consulting clients often dry up, and that's why digital product sales often remain steady or even increase as people are looking for more affordable alternatives.
  2. Increased Earning Potential: Diversification lets us tap into different markets. We can sell our expertise through coaching while also making money with our knowledge through digital products. It's about increasing our reach and our rewards.
  3. Flexibility: Multiple income streams give us the freedom to pivot. As trends change and they always do, having multiple options allows us to quickly adapt without losing momentum.
  4. Leveraging Expertise: As coaches and consultants, our knowledge is one of our greatest assets. You know this. And by packaging our knowledge, experience, expertise, and the magic ingredient, which is our take on it in different formats, courses, books, webinars, etcetera, we increase our visibility and our market impact without necessarily having to invest more time.

Effective Income Streams for Coaches and Consultants

Let's have a look at some highly effective income streams that can complement each other. I've seen this work wonders for many of my clients and for myself.

1. Coaching or Mentoring Services

Coaching and mentoring remain a strong revenue stream, especially if you specialise in areas like personal development, business strategy, money making, executive coaching. With the rise of Zoom and similar platforms, we can now reach clients across the world without leaving our home.

Here are a few approaches you can consider:

  • 1-to-1 Coaching or Mentoring: This is the traditional model, and it's still lucrative because it can be so personalised. But the one thing we need to do is to be bold enough to charge premium rates for our bespoke services, knowing that we always had massive value to our clients.
  • Group Coaching or Mentoring: This lets us help many clients at the same time, which leverages our time more effectively while still providing value.
  • Workshops, Webinars, and Master Classes: These are great for connecting with a much larger audience either for free or at a lower price point. They're also one of my favourite marketing tools for higher-end services.

2. Consulting Projects

If you've got in-depth experience in a particular industry, consulting can provide high-value project-based income. You can command premium rates for your specialised knowledge, and each project offers the chance to solve unique problems.

  • Retainer-based Consulting: This model creates steady, predictable income. You can position yourself as an ongoing partner offering continuous guidance and problem-solving.
  • Project-based Consulting: Large projects particularly might require intensive involvement, but they also offer substantial payoffs. We need to balance these with smaller, shorter-term projects for more consistent revenue flow.

3. Digital Products

This is where things get exciting. Digital products are the epitome of passive income. After the initial time investment to create them, we can then sell them repeatedly with less effort

  • Online Courses: Turning our coaching or consulting expertise into online courses. There are so many platforms out there that make it easy to launch and market courses to a global audience.
  • Ebooks:?Writing an ebook based on our knowledge can be a valuable source of income, providing credibility and passive revenue.
  • Tips Booklets:?These are a great way to share our knowledge in an easy-to-digest form, and they can be a great source of income.

4. Membership Sites or Subscription Services

One of my favourite models is the membership and subscription-based service. By offering exclusive content, different tools, or regular coaching sessions for a monthly fee, you can create a steady stream of income.

Balancing and Integrating Income Streams

Diversifying is all well and good, but it's equally important to balance and integrate these various income streams effectively. So I know you'll be able to do that, and I know you'll be able to take these ideas away and blend them into everything else that you're doing.

I hope these ideas have sparked some thoughts with you of different ways in which you can share your knowledge, your experience, your expertise, and you can positively impact the lives of your clients on the basis always that money is the silent applause for a job well done and value delivered to other people.
