Why Holland Park Tuition and Education Consultants are the best
Eton. Westminster. St Pauls. Great students. Struggling students. Students with mental health disabilities. Students who are moving between international systems.
Holland Park will be able to find experienced and successful tutors for even the most nuanced request. It’s exactly for this reason I’m very proud to have worked with Holland Park Tuition in the foundational part of my career.
At the time, having recently graduated from Imperial College London, I began as a tier 1 tutor taking on general jobs that utilised my expertise in maths and science (Biology in particular). In so doing, I got the opportunity to work with incredible families and Holland Park’s team which supported and advised me every step of the way.
I remember the first day, going through the interview process, and acknowledging the calibre of the candidates around me. Top graduates from Imperial College London, University College London, Oxford, top retired teachers. I thought I had no chance. They really do have the ability to attract the best talent, perhaps due to their proximity to the best institutions the UK has to offer.
What really impressed me was the final part of the interview process, which I think speaks volumes about this organisation. I have never experienced it again at any other tuition agency. We were gathered into groups and given situations: the student is unable to understand, the student is disorganised, the student is unhappy, the student is not completing homework, the student is uncooperative, the student is bored, the parent is unhappy. We had to explain what we would do as tutors in these situations.
Not only were our responses recorded as part of the process but advice was also given on best practice. This is just one of the many reasons why Holland Park is impeccable and their selection process leads to tutors who bring results.
Which leads me to mention that it was also with Holland Park I did one of my most rewarding work placements. It was for girls struggling with mental health and anorexia at a north London hospital that wanted to keep the girls up to date with their studies, particularly if they were in their GCSE or A-level year. This way there would be minimal disruption to their education once they recover and rejoin school. The work had its challenges as understandably, the girls were not able to concentrate well and sometimes, they had to be taken away due to an emergency health problem. For these reasons we had group lessons usually only 40 minutes long. To be able to communicate the A-level syllabus in a way that’s understood to a group in such a short time was a proposition I embraced. It pushed me to refine my technique, read the literature on learning theory and pay great attention to the students needs. Particularly by paying attention to the unsaid, their expressions and tone of voice.
From these foundations, as fortune has it, I became headhunted by other elite companies with whom I successfully lead Eton Scholarship examinations, St Paul's Girls entry, tuition placements abroad and IGCSE work for students changing systems (usually USA to UK).
I truly do believe that teaching is a craft and I’m thankful to Holland Park for the rewarding work and foundation experiences.
