I have been a personal development enthusiast (some might say addict) for more than 25 years and this is something I wished I had learnt earlier: to be successful, really successful you have to enroll your mind, for sure, but also your body and your spirit. Your mind alone will not be enough to bring you the personal growth and internal-external success you desire.
Usually, when we think about personal development, we tend to focus on activities that support the mind—meditation, psychotherapy, journaling, education, and so on. These are all fantastic tools, but surprise! You are not just a mind.
In my journey of exploring personal growth and transformation, I've realized that true development must embrace the entirety of our being. It's not just about nurturing our minds; we must also pay attention to our bodies and spirits.
Here’s why a Body-Mind-Spirit 360 Approach is essential.
??Healing the Body
Our bodies store our traumas. As Dr. Bessel van der Kolk explains in his groundbreaking book, “The Body Keeps the Score ”, trauma is not just a psychological phenomenon but also a physiological one. Traumatic experiences leave lasting imprints on the body and brain, affecting how we think, feel, and interact with the world. Van der Kolk highlights the intricate relationship between physical sensations and emotional states, emphasizing the importance of body-based therapies like yoga, dance, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), neurofeedback, theater, improvisation, and mindfulness practices.
