Why Hierarchies Kill Organisations

Let's analyze the simple organizational chart above:

1. The link between A and B is usually strong; as is the link between A and C.
2. The link between B and C is often weak and even competitive. Each is competing for the approval and attention of A.
3. Often B does not know C's capabilities and C doesn't know B's capabilities.
4. B is often looking for weaknesses in C; as is C in B.
5. B and C are careful to control what A hears.
6. A is often ill-informed.

Is it any wonder that hierarchies can kill organizations? I recommend you look into network alternatives.
