Happy New Year and welcome to part 2 of my conversation around why a newly written resume will not get you hired in 2020!
If you read my previous post you'll understand why having a new resume written is almost useless, unless you have a strategy. Don't get me wrong, it is necessary for the overall Career Transition process, but most people believe that they need a resume to get a job - wrong! You need a strategy that allows you to target specific companies, decision-makers, and a sophisticated process for following through until your mission is complete and you have your dream job (not just an average job).
To understand what I'm referring to will require you to review the previous post, if you haven't, here is the link.
Career Transition (often referred to as changing jobs) is a complex process. Think of it like buying a house. There is a buyer and a seller and an agent or broker to handle the transaction. Each party has their own idea as to what they want in the transaction, which is equally as important for the transaction to be successful.
Thus, the ability to understand and manage the transaction that you own and all of the parts that are involved, e.g. Resume & Cover Letter that is Applicant Tracking System Proofed, Understanding Applicant Tracking Systems, Branded and SEO'd LinkedIn Profile, Networking, Phone Interviews, Behavioral Interviews, Onsite Interviews, Spark Interview, Video Interview, Panel Interview, Follow-up Process, Offer Negotiations, Mindset (how you feel!), and many more intangible aspects are necessary to successfully complete the transaction.
Over the years I've spoken with countless clients who thought that they were the perfect candidate for a position that was posted or one that they had heard about from a friend then applied and NEVER had any follow-up communication from the company after applying.
It's like their resume went into a black hole and unfortunately, the application process is a broken system! Most companies will never respond to your application because they are not adequately equipped internally and fall short in the management of the recruiting and hiring process. How an organization manages the onboarding of potential employees can negatively reflect on their brand. I mean, if a company you're excited about doesn't have the decency to let you that you haven't been chosen, how do you end up feeling about that company?
Have you ever had that experience? If so, please leave a comment on this post!
There's another scenario. You could be qualified for the opportunity and even go through the interview process and be a finalist but not have an offer and never get feedback from the recruiter, headhunter, or company, which really sucks!
If you've ever had this happen, please leave a comment. :)
The truth is that most people want to have a new resume written to simply upgrade their jobs, which usually upgrades their lives. The other truth is that most people were educated in the 20th Century where resumes (analog), where the medium for applying for jobs.
Let's use a little pseudo math
Resume = Analog = 20th Century = non-digital = outdated.
LinkedIn Profile = Digital = 21st Century + Branding + Your Unique Value Proposition + Skills + Search Engine Optimized = Traffic = Interviews = Hiring Potential.
Interviews + Preparation + Skills and Articulation + Practice + Coaching + Accountability = Success!
If I were to ask you where you fall in these equations in terms of your preparedness, where are you? Be honest with yourself!
After having done this for over 20 years, most people are not prepared, which is why it takes longer for them to land an opportunity.
There are two groups of people I've seen in the career transition process.
Group 1: Looking to uplevel their lives and careers
Group 2: looking at anyone who will have them!
In my belief system, these two groups are divided by a spiritual principle that is referred to as Abundance and Scarcity. These twin systems are manifested based on what you believe. The question is which one do you identify with most at this point in your career trajectory?
Most importantly, your belief system will determine whether you attract or repel your dream circumstance or simply accept just another opportunity with the same challenges you've been trying to get out of.
The Four Categories of a Sophisticated Job Search Video (Part 2: Strategy) below was created to share insights into:
- Why your newly written resume (alone) won't help to get you in the door
- Why you need a networking strategy to get in front of decision-makers
- Interview Preparation is part of having a solid strategy, e.g. Phone, Onsite, Behavioral, Amazon.com (internal process), Panel Interviewing, Spark Interviews, Final Interviews, etc.
Over the years I've helped thousands of people navigate through the valleys of Career Transition, and have built a system that is very comprehensive, experiential, and easy to execute. Here are a few nuggets on why a new resume won't get you hired!
