Why have we stopped talking about dementia?
With Covid-19, understandably being the biggest and most important issue in our industry and senior figure heads of the care industry fighting to improve their own names by being the people that can tell the government how to change our industry, what has happened to the discussions about people with dementia?
The fact is that Covid-19 is the issue today, maybe for the next couple of years but Dementia has been a massive issue for many years and impacts more people today then Covid-19. When we have found a vaccine for Covid-19 and this becomes distant memories, then dementia will still be there, inside us, sucking the life out of people and families and increasing in cases. Even during this pandemic, people are being diagnosed daily with dementia, families are trying to find services to help them and no one is talking about it.
I 100% agree that our industry needs to change, I 100% agree that we need to recognise the amazing work of carers, nurses, doctors, paramedics, shop workers and everyone else that has risked their health in this period of history and every other day, outside of Covid-19. I 100% agree that politicians need to speak to the professionals about our industry to make changes, but why has this got to be the people that have a vested interest because their companies make profits out of it? Why can’t it be the people that work the floors and actually do the care that make these changes because they actually know what changes to make. Why can’t we continue to provide our time to keep Dementia, Cancer and any other diseases highest on the agenda?
My small organisation is committed to continually focus on improving the lives of people who have dementia, their carers, families and communities. We will continue to promote the fact that people with dementia’s lives matter, should not be forgotten by anyone and will give them a voice whenever they need it.
