Why to have a new year resolution …..or more…

Life is continuous till one’s death. Then why do we make resolutions at the yearend? Today, I want to have a dialog with you regarding the importance of New Year’s resolutions despite the low success rate of such resolutions and plenty of social media jokes making mockery of the same.

New Year's resolution is a tradition, most common in the Western Hemisphere but also found in the Eastern Hemisphere, in which a person makes a promise to do an act of self-improvement or something slightly nice, such as opening doors for people beginning from New Year's Day 1.

The failure rate of the participants has been as low as 88% for the below reasons:

  • Unrealistic goals (35%)
  • Didn't keep track of their progress (33%)
  • Forgot about it (23%)
  • Too many resolutions (9%)

So the big question is “Do we need a New Year’s resolution?

Let’s discuss it before arriving at any conclusion:

1.   Can we use the New Year as cutover from an unfulfilled life to a life full of hope?

Ohh…life is continuous and so are our habits. Though it is not a good idea to wait till year end to break a bad habit and replace it with a good one, the yearend gives good chance to disrupt status quo. We have long holidays, family celebrations, Christmas parties, New Year parties and so on. The positive energy is abundant in the air. We can really plan our transition from one state to another state during the cutover period.

2.   When did you recognize your flaws through self-reflection last time?

We are too busy in our life to introspect. Our desired and actual priorities are misaligned to our requirements. I am sure all of us want to lead a healthy life. However, how many of us give priority to a regular yoga, work-out, bi-cycling etc? We all want to spend time with our family / kids. How many of us really leave office early to spend an extra hour with our kids? At the year end, you get chance to think what is good for you? How can you change your life?

3.   Don’t we plan and prioritize our projects, family celebrations or even our days in office?

Planning is important in life because it allows individuals to use resources efficiently and prepare for the unexpected. It also helps us determine the right goals to seek. Proper planning helps us know what we should be trying to accomplish. If one considers himself CEO of his life, it makes sense to plan and prioritize the agendas for the next year.

4.   Do the failures mean there is no success?

We all know that New Year’s resolutions are big failures. One of the reason is because we want to see success in one year. Sometimes, it takes years to achieve what we aim. By the time we get to our milestone, we forget our resolution even though it remain ingrained in our thoughts and actions. My suggestion is that don’t be short sighted in weighing your New Year’s resolution by its success and failure.

Conclusion:

So folks, I suggest you to go ahead and make New Year’s resolutions for you.

I also take this opportunity to wish you and your near and dear ones Merry Christmas and exciting Happy New Year 2017 ahead.
