Why not have a laugh?

Why not have a laugh?

Last week, we stressed the importance of authenticity and?just being yourself. Today, we’re taking a look at how humour can help you to be more authentic.

In professional services, we’re often nervous about using humour, sometimes overthinking whether it’s appropriate. Yet, it’s an underestimated tool – when sales teams include a comic touch in their negotiations it?increases client trust and helps close deals.

The benefits of a light-hearted approach extend beyond relationships with clients, too – leaders with a sense of humour are?27% more motivating and inspiring?than those without.

A team culture full of personality and laughter, where everyone genuinely enjoys coming to work, will help you attract and retain the best talent.

We’ve put together a few dos and don’ts to give you added confidence when being funny in your professional life:

Do

  • Be self-deprecating: It’s entirely possible to take your job seriously, without taking yourself too seriously.
  • Read the room: Comedy is dependent on context, so, if you’re unsure, stick to familiar territory.

Don’t

  • Dig a hole: If your joke falls flat, brush it off and move on, rather than getting flustered as you try to explain your obscure Friends reference.
  • Worry about actually being funny: It’s the thought that counts – research suggests that all the benefits still apply, even to the worst dad-joke attempts!

“Do not take life too seriously. You will never get out of it alive.”?– Elbert Hubbard

Putting laughter to work can help you find small joys in your everyday interactions, nurture a vibrant company culture, and stand out from the crowd in your conversations with clients and prospects.
