Why have I been 'prescribing' newsletters to most of my clients these days?

Why have I been 'prescribing' newsletters to most of my clients these days?

This is a long postponed post.

Here I'll be discussing my take on

  • How I started a newsletter
  • How it has been helping me
  • Why I think it is important to you
  • The drawbacks, especially with LinkedIn newsletters
  • Why I still believe that it might be helpful
  • Recommendations

How I started my newsletter?

Well, I was exploring the Creator mode options and I stumbled upon it.

My first newsletter was on why I'm writing a newsletter (lol)

It gave me immense reach in a day.

And like an icing on the cake - Closed my first international client for writing blogs, when I don't have any expertise in it. Just that they liked the writing. No portfolio. No samples. Just the newsletter did the job and attracted them towards my profile.

How it has been helping me?

  • As I said, closed my first international client.
  • I got in some subscribers who liked my work.
  • This boosted my confidence and I started writing more.
  • I chose topics that I really wanted to explore in detail (just like this post) and I enjoyed doing it.

It feels like writing a letter to each subscriber :)

Why do I think it is important to you?

  • You may get similar benefits like I did.
  • You get to know who is following you. Not all my subscribers are connections and that's the point. You reach the unknowns!
  • You dive in to their inbox directly. There's no restriction to being on their feed to get the attention.
  • The analytics is beyond helpful. I reckon. It's really helpful.

If you had been following me, you would have known that I took a gap of almost four months but my analytics had improved immediately.

Even while I was inactive, my newsletter analytics hardly had negative impressions.

  • Not many creators know to write a skim-friendly or useful newsletter even today. So if you nail it, you may explore that market soon.

The drawbacks, especially with LinkedIn newsletters

  1. The major drawback I see is - YOU DON'T OWN YOUR SUBSCRIBERS!

The data about your subscribers or if you wish to know who read a particular post, who ignored your mail, you won't get to know it.

The life of your LinkedIn newsletter is at the mercy of LinkedIn itself.

2. You can easily get ignored - YES!

Many creators have their very own newsletters and subscribing to it is hardly a tap away. There are chances that your newsletter may get ignored or even deleted without opening.

3. Newsletter writing is not that easy. You may have to invest some time than a normal post.

Why I still believe that it might be helpful

  • As someone who was scared of it initially, it helped me grow my confidence level.
  • You can write long forms.
  • Incorporating SEO-friendly keywords into your newsletter's title and content can boost visibility beyond LinkedIn.

For example, researching trending keywords in your industry can help you tailor your content to attract new readers from search engines.

  • It's FREE! Some newsletter sites might involve some initial payment. Making an investment on it before knowing, might be demotivating to a few. Here, you can experiment. If it works, it worked. If it didn't, you tried.

Recommendations

  1. If you don't prefer using LinkedIn newsletters, as a beginner, Substack might be a great option. It's user friendly interface is easily understandable.
  2. The Invisible Selling Machine by Ryan Deiss is a great book that guides on email marketing. I did my research on analyzing the top books on client acquisition and lead generation online, top 25, top 10, ChatGPT recommendations and Reddit, Inc. This was one of the books that was common in the lists.

I'm yet to make my Substack active, but I might do it soon due to the same drawbacks I have mentioned in this newsletter. This is an early join link.

So, whether you choose LinkedIn or Substack or any other (DON'T FORGET TO SHARE THEM IN COMMENTS AND WHY YOU CHOSE THAT), the key is to start. Have any thoughts or questions on newsletters? Drop them in the comments or subscribe to my own newsletter to stay in the loop!
