Why have a Coach

Have you ever asked why have a coach?

With Emirates Team NZ winning The 2021 America's Cup it is obvious that having a coach helped the winning team to overcome major barriers that would have otherwise stopped them. If you are serious about achieving anything outside of your comfort zone, anything where you are aiming to reach your full potential, read on...

When I saw the "sweat rooms" and listened to the team members talk about their training, and listened to the coach for the 'grinders' talking about what it takes to become a grinder, I realised that they couldn't have gotten there without one or more coaches. To be a grinder, which is a position the majority of the sailors assume on this new breed of yachts, they must be able to operate manual winches that raise and trim the sails and move the boom. These yachts do not sit in the water, they 'fly' above the water because of the power the grinders exert on the sails. The role of a grinder (grindsman) is so physically demanding that whilst training to achieve the maximum upper body strength and fitness required, the coaches, frequently if not every day, pushed these men past their point of coping.

For most of the training, to vomit in a 'sick bucket' was an everyday occurrence.

What was required for these top teams, both Italy and New Zealand, to achieve their levels of strength, to find the energy required each day of professional racing and to make it through to the end?

1. A specific detailed vision, (a clear picture of the desired end-result in their mind).

2. An unwavering commitment and decision for that outcome.

3. The courage and dedication to take action, to do whatever it takes to achieve that result.

There is a formula for success. It goes like this...

Our thoughts create our feelings and emotions, which cause the actions that we take, which cause our results.

Clearly, all those in the winning team of New Zealand sailors in Emirates Team New Zealand had a clear mental image of their desired outcome and felt the emotion of the win, well before they had gotten there.

They then took the actions:

The sailors trained, practised, trained and practised, over and over until they were razor-sharp balls of muscles, to support their helmsman, Peter Burling to drive that beautiful craft and take the winning place, retaining The America's Cup yet again.

And of course, let us not forget about all the other members of the wider team (engineers and boat builders) whom all contributed to the craft "Te Aihe" being the fastest and best craft in the race. America's Cup defenders Emirates Team New Zealand have done things differently this time, by building their own boats for the first time. They have once again made history.

This is a great article, Karen. You have skilfully woven ?? the example of the America's Cup participants (in particular, the two top teams) with those Dreambuilders among us who know that it takes the right mindset, dedication and vision to achieve anything we set our minds to, anything we can dream :)
