Why Guest Posting Is Still the #1 Link Building Strategy (And Not Spammy!)

Guest posting is a topic that sparks a lot of debate in the SEO world. Some think it’s an effective strategy, while others claim it’s nothing more than a spammy practice. After three years of extensive research and testing, I’ve come to some conclusions that may surprise you.

?? What Is Guest Posting?

Guest posting is the act of publishing content on another website to gain exposure or backlinks. For example, a plumber might write a post for an electrician’s site because the topics are somewhat related. In SEO, guest posting is primarily used as a link-building strategy, and according to a survey by Authority Hacker, it remains the most popular tactic among link builders.

??♂? Isn’t Guest Posting Spammy?

When I first started experimenting with guest posts, I was firmly in the camp that thought it was a spammy strategy. I hired a company that claimed to do “white hat” guest posting, but the results made me question how “white hat” it really was.

The sites they used were clearly built for SEO purposes, with “Submit Post” buttons plastered at the top and content filled with ads. Sites that prominently feature a “submit post” button are often red flags. Legitimate websites usually vet their content contributors carefully. If anyone can submit a post, it’s likely a site built solely for SEO purposes.

?? Do Guest Posts Work for SEO?

Despite my doubts, I decided to test guest posting to see if it could provide any value. I hired a company to build six guest post links for a test site. To my surprise, it worked—at least initially. The organic rankings went up after two months of posting just a couple of guest posts per month.

However, the success didn’t last long. The next month, we lost all the gains.

The key issue with guest posts, especially on low-quality sites, is that the ranking benefit they give you often doesn’t last. As Google continues to deindex spammy pages, the benefit from those links starts to decline. Over time, these links lose value, and the rankings they helped boost will start to drop.

?? Case Study: A Home Services Client’s Decline

One of my clients in the home services industry experienced a significant drop in traffic after an algorithm update last year. They had hired another company to handle their link building, and over two years, they built 425 links—primarily through guest posts.

Here’s what I discovered:

Each time we optimized a page, traffic increased. When the link-building company added guest posts, traffic rose even more.

However, after a core algorithm update, their traffic began to decline steadily.

Many of the links were from pages no longer in Google’s index, which explained the drop in traffic.

??♀? How to Avoid Guest Post Pitfalls

  • Check the Site’s Indexing: One of the most important factors to check is whether the page where your link resides is still indexed by Google. If it’s not, that link isn’t passing any value to your site.
  • Review Traffic Patterns: If a site linking to you is seeing a decline in traffic, chances are your link is losing value too. Use tools like Ahrefs to analyze traffic patterns and avoid sites that are tanking.
  • Quality Over Quantity: Instead of focusing on how many guest posts you can get, prioritize the quality of the site and the content. A few well-placed, high-quality links can be more effective than dozens of links from low-quality sites.

?? Guest Posting vs. Other SEO Strategies

One of the biggest problems with guest posting at scale is that it can undo itself over time. Google continues to improve its algorithms to catch and deindex low-quality content, so while guest posts might provide a temporary boost, the long-term benefits are questionable.

For a more sustainable SEO approach, I recommend focusing on building high-quality links on legitimate, high-traffic sites. Sure, this method takes longer, but the results will last far longer than what you can expect from a quick guest post strategy.

?? Conclusion: Is Guest Posting Worth It?

Guest posting can work, but you need to be careful about where you publish. Spammy sites or over-scaling guest posts can lead to deindexed pages and lost rankings. In contrast, high-quality guest posts on reputable sites can provide a significant boost.
