Why Great Leaders Listen.

There are leaders who speak without listening and there are leaders who listen without speaking.

'They hear us but they do not listen'

One day the CEO of a big Dutch banking company visited a local branch. When he arrived with his staff he disappeared and was nowhere to be found. At last his worried staff saw him standing just around the corner. He was listening to two old ladies who were complaining about the services of the bank. Promises had been made but were never kept. Then the old ladies thanked him for taking time to listen to them. From that moment on the CEO knew what the visit was really about.

'Leaders who don't listen will eventually be surrounded by people who have nothing to say"

Everyday when President Obama finished his work in the Oval Office he read ten letters. Ten letters send from all over the country by people who shared their concerns, doubts, anger and despair with the President. After he finished reading the last letter he knew what was expected of him and how he had to serve the People.

A President who reads letters and a CEO who takes time to listen to complaints. Will it change the world? I don't know. But it changes the world of the two ladies and the ones who wrote a letter to the President. They feel appreciated and respected because they have been listened to. And the President and the CEO? They work in silence and are grateful that they were reminded who they work for....

'Really listening without making empty promisses is what makes you more successful in the end'
