Why Graduates are Struggling to Find A Job & How to Fast Track Your Job Search

I recently ran a poll on LinkedIn asking University Graduates how they are finding the current job market and what their experiences have been like. The results have been alarming!

The overwhelming majority are finding the process “depressingly slow” and unsure what their next step should be. The traditional view of brushing up your cv and applying for as many jobs as possible seems like a good idea at first glance but on more in depth analysis could well be counter productive.

In the modern jobs market it is vital to use technology to your advantage.

So I thought it would be good to collate my Top 10 Tips for kick starting your career search and land the great opportunity that graduates deserve.

Firstly it’s really important to adapt to current trends and challenges. Our grads are quite possibly the most tech savvy University leavers ever, so utilising all those skills they take for granted in their day to day TicToc lives, for personal career growth is not just an easy win but key to maximising your chances of success.

Here are my Top 10 Tips to job search success:

1. Develop In-Demand Skills

  • Identify Key Skills: Research the most sought-after skills in your industry. Whether it's technical abilities (like data analysis, programming, or digital marketing) or soft skills (such as communication and problem-solving), focus on areas where there’s strong demand.
  • Learn Continuously: Use online platforms like LinkedIn Learning, edX or Udemy to gain certifications in relevant areas. Make sure you highlight these certifications on your resume.

2. Tailor Your Resume

  • Personalize for Each Job: Don’t use the same resume or CV for every application. It is crucial that you customise them to the specific job description by highlighting relevant experiences and skills.
  • Show Results: Include measurable achievements in your resume. For example, instead of saying “Intern at ABC Company,” write “Increased social media engagement by 30% during internship at ABC Company.”

3. Leverage Networking

  • Use LinkedIn: Connect with professionals in your industry, follow companies, and above all engage with posts to build your network. Don’t hesitate to reach out for informational interviews or advice.
  • Attend Industry Events: Join webinars, conferences, and meetups (virtual or in-person) where you can interact with people in your field.
  • Alumni Networks: Connect with university alumni who work in companies or industries you’re targeting. Alumni are often more open to helping recent graduates.?

4. Gain Experience Through Internships, Freelancing, or Volunteering

  • Internships: If full-time roles are limited, internships are a great way to gain hands-on experience and get your foot in the door.
  • Freelance Work: Platforms like Upwork or Fiverr offer opportunities to build a portfolio while earning money. This is especially helpful in industries like writing, design, programming, and marketing.
  • Volunteer: Volunteering in your field not only boosts your resume but also provides valuable networking opportunities.

5. Master the Job Search Process

  • Use Multiple Platforms: Apply through job sites like Indeed and Glassdoor and professional networking sites like LinkedIn but also check out niche job boards tailored to your field.
  • Optimize for ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems): Many companies use ATS software to filter and highlight top matched resumes. Use keywords from the job description to increase your chances of getting past the initial screening.

6. Prepare for Virtual Interviews

  • Practice Interviewing: Virtual interviews are now the norm. Practice answering common questions via video to get comfortable with the format.
  • Technical Set-Up: Ensure you have a quiet space, a reliable internet connection, and a professional background for online interviews.

7. Be Open to Entry-Level Positions

  • Stay Flexible: Consider entry-level positions or roles that might not exactly match your ideal job but offer room for growth. This can help you gain the necessary experience to transition into your desired role later.

8. Focus on Personal Branding

  • Build an Online Presence: You can’t get much better than LinkedIn to establish a professional online presence where you can showcase your work, achievements, and skills.
  • Content Creation: Posting articles or thoughts on topics related to your field can help position you as a knowledgeable professional and attract the attention of recruiters.?

9. Keep a Positive Mindset and Be Persistent

  • Resilience is Key: The job search can be discouraging, but persistence is essential. Rejections are common, so don’t take them personally. Each application and interview brings you closer to your goal.
  • Track Your Applications: Keeping track of the jobs you’ve applied for will help you follow up when needed and avoid overlap.

10. Consider Upskilling or Further Education

  • Specialized Training: If you’re struggling to break into your desired field, consider advanced certifications, workshops, or even a short-term course that will give you an edge.

One of the best pieces of advice I was given by a seasoned recruiter when I was first looking for a role fresh out of College, was that searching for a job is a full time job. Never a truer word said. Treating your job search as your job starting early and finishing late whilst implementing the 10 point plan will undoubtedly bear fruit and will set you far ahead of the rest of the field!
