Why go, and why present at a trade show?

Don’t just watch life go by, we need to maximise the ‘Trade Show’. It must impact beyond the stand.

Trade shows serve as bustling hubs where industries converge, ideas spark, and networks flourish. However, attending a trade show is not just about the days spent amidst the stands, displays and old colleagues (Like EMEX), it is a catalyst for ongoing engagement and growth. I attended EMEX 2023 this year and had a stand, which we have done for the last 3 years. In this article, I delve into the significance of post-trade show activities and how businesses can capitalise on the momentum gained during these events.

The trade show experience, though tiring offers a unique platform for businesses to showcase their products, connect with industry peers, and gain insights into emerging trends. However, the true potential lies in what happens after the last stand is dismantled. The end of a trade show doesn't mark the conclusion of opportunities, it signals the beginning of a new phase. Rather than waiting for the next annual event, businesses should proactively leverage the connections made and insights gained to fuel their ongoing strategies.

We as energy experts and professionals must follow up on leads or should I say new colleagues now in our network. These new colleagues lead during the show are like seeds planted during spring. To reap a bountiful harvest, diligent nurturing is essential. Promptly follow up with contacts, send personalised emails, and express genuine interest in continuing the conversation. This not only solidifies connections but also sets the stage for future collaboration.

In the dynamic landscape of business, waiting until the next trade show can mean missing out on countless opportunities. Instead of letting the momentum fade, businesses should focus on immediate action. Explore collaborative projects, share resources, and actively contribute to the industry dialogue. However, that does not mean bombarding new contacts with emails.

Trade shows are not just about transactions; they are about relationships. Foster a sense of community by engaging with contacts on social media, participating in relevant forums, and attending smaller industry events. Cultivate relationships that extend beyond the confines of a convention centre. I met some amazing individuals during EMEX 2023 new and old to the industry and I’m very excited grow this community.

The knowledge gained at a trade show is a powerful asset. Stay abreast of industry developments, implement new strategies, and showcase how your business is evolving. Position yourself as a thought leader by sharing insights gained from the trade show experience.

Trade shows offer a wealth of feedback from diverse perspectives. Use this information to refine products, enhance services, and address pain points identified during conversations. Adapting based on real-time feedback positions your business as responsive and customer centric. Though, on Day 1 I was bombarded by ‘Marketing’ People advising me that my stand needed more work done on it regarding colours (But I like Orange).

Explore collaborative initiatives with other businesses you connected with at the trade show. Whether it's joint ventures, co-marketing efforts, or shared research projects, collaborative endeavours can amplify the impact of your trade show experience. It was great, as we did just that, working alongside What’s the Payback Ian Douglas and Measurable Energy Adam Wright as well as many more. (These two were our neighbours on the day!)

In conclusion, attending a trade show is just the beginning of a broader journey. By actively engaging with leads, embracing the present, and leveraging the knowledge gained, businesses can turn a trade show appearance into a catalyst for ongoing success and growth. I have written this article through the eyes of the exhibitor, but imagine being the visitor, embrace the opportunity to see the trends, the technologies and importantly the people. We are all there for one thing … reducing kWH.

Having been part of Paul Webb, Energy Expert and B2B Energy Ltd stand last year, I was gutted I couldn’t make it this years EMEX London. It is a perfect event for intense networking with many like minded individuals with advice, support and great technology to help us all into a sustainable future and help us on our journeys to Net Zero. I will certainly do my best to attend next years event. It’s all about #energymanagement
