Why go deskside?

Why go deskside?

Hello!

We're on the lookout for a Deskside Infrastructure Engineer at the Office for National Statistics , to work desk-side in our Titchfield office. It's a varied role with great learning & progression opportunities, where you can gain a strong insight into how modern large enterprises keep things ticking over!

But of course I would say that - so why don't we ask one of the current Titchfield Deskside Infrastructure Engineers what it's all about?

Read below to see exactly what Lou had to say about the role, the Titchfield office and ONS itself. Thanks again Lou!

How long have you been with us at ONS?

I was employed by ONS in 2016 and started my role in Deskside in October 2022.

Why did you decide to go for the role originally?

My previous role was in a smaller tech support team in the Social Survey Division in ONS so my reason for applying for this job in Deskside was to be able to expand and develop my IT knowledge.

How have you found the role so far?

It has been a fun challenge and I have found myself learning something new every day.

What does an average day look like for you?

A typical day will consist of problem solving with customers on the phone and via screenshares, a daily team meeting from all 3 sites to see what the workload is looking like and if there’s any info or concerns anyone wishes to bring up with the rest of the team to get some help, going around the office space helping customers with their workstation if they have reported it to be faulty, building replacement laptops to then send in the post to people, and processing returned KIT from people leaving the organisation.

What is the team you work in like?

It’s a friendly group of people who all look out for each other. The dynamic in the team is such that we can have fun as well as being able to collaborate effectively on day-to-day tasks. There’s a mixture of knowledge which works well to problem solve when helping customers

What’s the Titchfield office like?

The office in Titchfield can be described as a bit of a maze but once you realise it is just a big square it’s quite easy to navigate around. There was some refurbishment during the pandemic when most staff were still working from home which has given the space a more open and clean feeling.

How have ONS been as an employer so far?

I have found ONS to be a good place to work due to the vast opportunities that are available to me, I have worked 4 different roles since joining in 2016. I’m someone who enjoys learning new skills and knowledge so this has allowed me to do this.

What have you learned since joining ONS?

I’ve learned how and what statistics are gathered from my roles in the Social Survey Division and working in DST I have learnt about various software used around ONS and how to problem solve these to allow people to continue working.

What’s been the best/your favourite part of your time in this position so far?

I’ve enjoyed the problem-solving aspect of working in Deskside and speaking with our ‘customers’ to work out the issue together. I find it very fulfilling to see a problem through to the end to it being resolved.

Why should someone apply to join the team?

You will be joining a team in which you will be supported and made to feel part of a bigger picture within ONS

What an informative read!

The role is live now. Applications close at 11.55pm on Tuesday 13th February 2024, so if this sounds like your next role don't delay - get started!
