Why Go Cable Free?

This go cable free initiative?began when Willmott Dixon wanted to implement a cable free site on a project in Cobham, Surrey. But how could they do it? Going out to the supply chain, they got together with our seminar attendees Milwaukee and Speedy Hire to thrash out a response to the big questions and doubts around using battery-powered tools, with a hope to decrease or eliminate:

? Trip hazards from trailing leads to different power points or charging facilities across site, reducing office paperwork

? Interrupted works when installing or moving charging facilities around site

? Reduction in cable accessories

? Increased costs due to installation and PAT testing of multiple charging facilities on site

? Risk of theft or damage to tools or equipment when left unattended

? Increasing the achievability of a more sustainable way of working

The question of power was raised; could a cordless, battery-powered tool offer the same flexibility as its cordless version? The ranges of cordless tools have become infinite – hammers, saws, cutters, crimpers, drivers, screwdrivers, measuring tools, the site hoover – the list is endless, even the essential site radio can now go cable free.

As the project grew Advanté came on board to design a static unit capable of charging multiple batteries in one unit via lockers and charge points with the capacity to charge tools and machinery, vehicles, or phones to name but a few uses. The PowerStation was born.

Following the initiative the cable-free movement grew and grew, and the answers to more and more questions were solved – what about the fire risk of using lithium batteries? Denios, started over 30 years ago in a response to the Sandoz warehouse fire, designing innovative solutions to store, charge, handle, transport, and test lithium batteries on sites, most recently creating a unit that encapsulates a lithium battery fire should one occur, using PyroBubbles.

Big players Hilti and Makita also came on board to develop more and more cordless tools making it easy to ensure you have a sustainable option for your site.

So boxes ticked, there’s no reason not to Go Cable Free, the initiative achieving:

? Emission-free working on site including electric vehicles, plant and machinery

? Supporting Clients aims in reducing their carbon footprint

? Inclusion towards Considerate Constructors best practice

? Significantly reducing cable management on site.
