Why is Giving Important?
Today is Giving Tuesday! How much do you know about this day? This day represents “a movement to create an international day of charitable giving at the beginning of the Christmas and holiday season”. With the holiday season fast approaching we all start to think about what our budget is, how to find that perfect gift, and what amazing food items to prepare for the holiday meal.
Studies have shown that generous people tend to be healthier people. This year let’s not get caught up in giving the biggest and best gifts. Let’s take time for friends and family, helping those in need, and giving gifts that have true meaning.
Here are a few reasons why giving is important:
- Giving can Reduce Stress. Generosity helps take the focus off our own problems and helps us put them into perspective. Giving towards those who are struggling can cause us to become more thankful for what we have. This year why not find a local homeless shelter or a non-profit organization to volunteer your time. There is no better way to reduce your stress then to give your time to serve others.
- Giving can Strengthen Relationships. Be generous with your time. When you make time for family and friends it builds and strengthens relationships that will far outlast the holiday season. Open your home to friends and family that have no where to go for the holidays. Maybe play some board games and put the devices away for an evening. Make memories and laugh together.
- Giving can bring Joy. Generosity brings joy. Real joy is not experienced by serving ourselves but rather it is about serving others. Giving a thoughtful gift to a child or family in need will bring you more joy then anything else. Give to a charity that represents the things you are passionate about.
Often times the one giving the “gift” receives more then the one that received it. This holiday season I challenge you to find creative ways to give your time and money in ways that really make a difference. Giving Tuesday reminds us that the holiday season is not just about receiving gifts and planning the perfect holiday meal. Allow yourself to be stretched in the area of generosity this year and perhaps you will find yourself happier and more thankful then ever.
