Why Gift Baskets and Conferences Won't Make Your Team High Performers

Why Gift Baskets and Conferences Won't Make Your Team High Performers

Before you hire your next consultant who says they can help build a high performance team in your organization, ask yourself - do you have the ecosystem in place to support your investment?

Most CEO’s who think they’re doing good by their organization will soon realize the pain of investing dollars with no ROI and here’s why:?

  • Individual barriers that limit success
  • Lack of assigned resources to continue to evolve new skills
  • No community that supports the evolution of performance

To bridge the gap and build a High Performance Ecosystem, you need the following formula:

Mentor (Self) + Coach (Skill) + Network (Subscribers) + Advocates (Support) =?

Performance Ecosystem

Here’s a quick story I want to share with you to explain why this works:

About 4 years ago, I met with a coach and I asked “What can I do to improve my performance?” Tactically, I was executing the role, but I was not seeing my next promotion in the future.?

They told me I needed “presence.”?

When I asked for ‘how’ to do that, there were no answers. There was no system to help me evolve my performance if it was not related to my technical work.? It wasn’t until I was in my own business I realized I had to build an ecosystem of resources to make a significant transformation in my performance.

When building that ecosystem I focused on the following:?

  • A Mentor is needed for Self Discovery; to ask questions about your beliefs and mindset. This resource will open the mind to be open to new ways of thinking and behaving. They ask well placed questions that enable you to find the answers within yourself. When they asked me what I was hoping to achieve by putting out my thought leadership videos on Linkedin, I said I wanted to establish know, like & trust. When they shared I was too scripted and they said “you need to get over yourself “ and lighten up, I knew right away what I needed to do. They never told me what to do, but I found the answer within myself to just push the record button and be myself. One of the best? pieces of advice I ever received!
  • A Coach is needed to develop Skills missing that will enhance the talents you already have. In my case, I have a skill for writing, but I needed a coach to guide the book writing process. After setting my intention and my guide to building my capability, The CEO’s Compass - Your Guide to Get Back on Track will be published in 2021.?
  • Who you know is more important than how many you know, an important fact of life I did not realize until I was on an island by myself in business. I knew a lot of people while racing to build a business, but later found that an intentional Network was critical for people to Subscribe to your brand. I can say with hand over heart, the 3500 Linkedin connections I had up until now were less valuable than the recent 500 people in my Network who are helping me meet the people I need to meet to build my business. Having the right people in your network will guide you to the people that ultimately will support your goals. Unfortunately this is not taught in school or business; only by being in the right circles and seeing this behavior can this be learned or reading self development books.?
  • I once had an Advocate in corporate and as they rose the corporate ladder, they brought me along with them. When they got another promotion and I was still in my role, the Advocacy and their Support stopped. I also didn’t know how to create that advocacy? and several years later I left that company. Again, as I moved into my business and had to build that ecosystem around me, my mentor said you can push and push, but you need brand Advocates. These are the people that will promote you to the world; resulting in a pull for your skills and then you can more easily serve others.

As I turn my personal story back to the CEO who wants to build a high performance team, I propose you put the ecosystem in place to support your investment. Ensure you have a Coach, a Mentor, a Network and Advocates to build the community or new skills to be developed.

Learning is not a one and done event, but something that requires time to evolve new levels of performance.

So I ask you the question: Are you ready to build a Performance Ecosystem for a lasting impact??

If this sounds like what you want, but are unsure how to start, let’s have a call to jumpstart your High Performance Ecosystem.?

If this article was helpful, I have more resources for you. It was because of my struggles to find the ecosystem to thrive vs. survive, that I can help you get back on track.

Nice article Deb Coviello The Drop in CEO?. You make very good points and provide sound advice. I encourage everyone, particularly young people starting out, to seek out mentors and coaches. I wish I knew that years ago. And those of us who can should make time to support and lift others. It's mutually beneficial! Now, I do like pizza lunches and all get togethers - these help with team building as well as getting to know colleagues as individuals. Teamwork + collaboration = success! ??
