Why the GIF is the New Email: The Pros and Cons of Animated Communication

GIFs have become the way of communicating emotions, thoughts, and ideas in the digital age. The short, animated images can add a touch of humour, expressiveness, and creativity to online conversations. But their use in professional settings could raise questions about their effectiveness and appropriateness.

For me, GIFs save time and enhance the meaning of messages. They quickly convey emotions, reactions, or information that might otherwise take several sentences to express. A well-placed GIF can also lighten a conversation and help build rapport with colleagues and clients.

However, the ease of use and widespread availability of GIFs also poses some challenges. What if your Rainbow Spongebob or Popcorn eating MJ is misinterpreted and taken out of context, leading to misunderstandings and even conflict in the workplace? Are you at risk of trivialising an important issue or being seen to be unprofessional?

There are many more sensitive and subtle questions around appropriation and identity ownership that may lead to the cancellation of GIF culture but for now the GIF is here to stay...until the next advance in tech shorthand comes along.

I'm a GIF fan, but like the any communication, I think before I send and I check the feedback. Enjoy your GIFS, but sprinkle with care.
