Geotechnical and structural health monitoring are essential in constructing and maintaining the architectural marvels that shape our cities. These disciplines are the backbone of constructing safe, efficient, and sustainable megastructures that shape our skylines and redefine what is possible.

Instrumentation and data are the heartbeats of this monitoring process. It involves using specialized tools like vibration sensors, tiltmeters, and strain gauges, all working together to understand how a structure behaves and reacts to its environment. These instruments continuously gather data via dataloggers, sending it to a centralized data management system where engineers analyze it in real-time. Robust, reliable sensors measure parameters like tilt, underground movement, load, stress, strain, and water pressure. Simply put,?it's like checking a building's blood pressure or heartbeat to ensure it's healthy.

Why does this matter? Imagine a bridge that's beginning to show signs of wear and tear. Without proper monitoring, the bridge could become a safety hazard. But with the instruments in place, engineers can detect these issues early, allowing for timely repairs and preventing potential disasters. They often do not have to visit the site as frequently, as real-time online data and alarm information are available on their smart devices, complementing periodic on-site inspections. Therefore, with advanced instrumentation, potential problems can be detected long before they become visible to the naked eye, allowing for preventive maintenance and repairs.

Geotechnical and structural health monitoring is to our infrastructure what regular health check-ups are to our bodies. It's an essential practice to ensure our buildings and dams are beautiful, innovative, safe, and enduring. Just as we wouldn't ignore a warning sign in our health, we shouldn't overlook the vital signs of our infrastructure.

Sometimes it is just a matter of not knowing of how useful I&M could be, but unfortunately in many occasions the problem is still that it is seen as an unneeded cost. Probably one of our biggest challenges in the industry is helping stakeholders understand that I&M is not an expense but an investment.
