Why Gen Z Workers Don't Want To Be Middle Managers

Did you read about the recent survey which found that 52% of Gen Z workers don't want to be middle managers? The survey by talent solutions firm Robert Walters found:

* 66% thought middle management was too stressful and not well enough rewarded.

* 30% would opt for a flat structure over a hierarchical one (14%)

* 72% wanted an individual route to progression over managing others.

The thing is, I don't think this is a Gen Z problem. All too often people are parachuted into leadership roles without proper preparation and training. If you're good at your role, often the only option for progression is to take on management responsibilities. So who can blame someone for not wanting this path? The thing I think is unique about Gen Z is they are less willing to put up with the status quo and more likely to challenge it, hence the survey results.

With a multigenerational workforce, from Baby Boomers to Gen Z, employers need to work harder than ever to make sure they have a culture where everyone feels valued and able to succeed. Key themes for employers over the next few years will be listening to what their people want, thinking creatively about their structure and opportunities for progression and better preparing people for leadership roles.

Public Workshop For Leaders

I'm considering launching my first public workshop for leaders. Titled How To Lead A Happy Team, we'd look at practical ways to help your team thrive and be more joyful at work. It would be a two-hour virtual workshop, (although I love the idea of doing something in person in Bristol if there's appetite?). There'd be a charge of around £50 per attendee (assuming it's virtual). To find out more, register your interest here.

Happy Starts Here...

If you're thinking The Happy Business School might be able to help your organisation but want to know more, I've created this short guide which explains the services I offer and how we can work together. Take a look here.
